The Word Health Organization says as many as 450 million people suffer from mental disorders globally. The continuing conflict in Somalia is having a huge impact on the mental health of many Somalis. Dr Abdirahman Ali Habeeb, is a psychiatric nurse by training, but prefers the title doctor, says:"The bombardments, shootings and mortar shellings is what is causing the increasing number of mentally ill in Mogadishu." Mysterious Illness Hits New York Kids, Covered Up By HIPPA Privacy Rule 2012
A parent of a Le Roy student who developed tic-like symptoms said his daughter was told she suffers from Conversion Disorder. Don Miller said his daughter's doctor diagnosed her with the disorder. Conversion Disorder is defined as a neurological disorder that can be brought on by stress with symptoms that include numbness, paralysis, and inability to speak. The New York State Department of Health says since September, 12 girls in Le Roy suddenly developed tics. Some are so bad, they had to be pulled out of school and tutored at home. Wednesday night, James Dupont attended a meeting at Le Roy Junior-Senior High School hoping to find some answers about what may be wrong with his daughter. In the first week of December, his 17-year-old daughter suddenly developed tics, showing Tourette-like symptoms. But she isn't the only one. "I worry about my daughter's future," says Dupont. "She's only 17. She can't even drive now... My daughter hasn't been able to go to school for a month because she's got this so bad." Dupont hoped that the meeting with the New York State Department of Health would give him some answers, but he says he's more frustrated and confused than before. "It's a tearjerker and it hits you in the gut at the same time. You feel frustrated and helpless because you don't know what you can do, and you're not getting any answers." "Jan. 27 update: Erin Brockovich is on the case! The environmental activist, made famous by the 2000 movie starring Julia Roberts as the crusading single mom, tells USA TODAY she is investigating the case of more than a dozen teens from one upstate New York school plagued by mysterious, Tourette's-like symptoms. One neurologist who has seen most of the affected girls has diagnosed their illness as psychological in origin; but that diagnosis has been difficult for some parents and community members to accept. Brockovich told USA TODAY that at the request of local residents, she is looking into a 1970 train accident that spilled cyanide and an industrial solvent called trichloroethene close to the site of the Le Roy, New York school. Comedian Russell Brand has told MPs on the Home Affairs Select Committee addiction should be treated as an illness instead of a crime. The 36-year-old who said he had beaten a heroin addiction which saw him arrested a dozen times, blamed his drug problems on emotional and psychological difficulties. Society should not "discard people, write them off on methadone and leave them on the sidelines" and should exercise more "love and compassion", he argued.
