Martin Indyk: Dissembling Foes ... and Friends

Ignorance of your partners is a really bad first step in negotiations. Former peace negotiator and American Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk has written _Innocent Abroad_ to help Americans avoid mistakes while negotiating with nations in the Middle East. And, by learning to listen, we might even learn why Iran wants nuclear weapons.

Indyk Opening Remarks

The US already tolerates nuclear weapons from many countries, including Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan. Pakistan, in particular, has sold this technology to our enemies and has terrorists on their soil. So why is Iran worse? Iran has always exercised great restrained in the use of military power. If were concerned with Israels safety, we can extend our nuclear umbrella to their country and build up their missile defenses. We should make every effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons because this would pose a threat to our national security and that of our allies in the region. But there are ways to deal with this that fall short of military action.

Peace talks in the Middle East - Martin Indyk

US president Barack Obama met Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House for the first time last week, conducting talks which lasted many hours. But although Israel has agreed to take part in peace talks with the Palestinians, Netanyahu has yet to agree to a two-state solution; a fundamental part of the Obama administration's new Middle East peace initiative. And in another rebuke to the US, Benjamin Netanyahu announced overnight that Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank will be allowed to expand, despite US objections. So what are the chances of President Obama brokering any kind of new initiative in this region in the near future? www.abc.net.au

Indyk Closing Remarks

The most important thing to remember is that military action only has limited utility. In the best case, it can buy two to three years, but it will also drive the Iranian nuclear program underground. When you look at the downside, we have to do everything possible through diplomacy, sanctions, and other means to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. But if this fails, we need to move fast toward a policy of deterrence, containment, punishment, and isolation.
