Six dead in Baghdad interior ministry suicide attack

www.euronews.net Iraqi authorities say a car bomb in Baghdad has killed at least six people and wounded more than 30 in an attack on the interior ministry. Police say a suicide bomber drove his car into a security cordon outside the building. Four policemen were among the dead. The blast followed a wave of explosions last Thursday that killed at least 72 people in Baghdad. Sunni insurgents are suspected of targeting the ministry following last week's arrest warrant issued for the country's Sunni vice president.

Trial of Former Egyptian Interior Minister Delayed to April 2, Dozens Call for his Execution.mp4

An Egyptian criminal court on Saturday, March 5, adjourned the trial of former Interior Minister Habib Al-Adli, who is facing charges of money laundering and profiteering, for April 2, responding to a request from his lawyer. Al-Adli, who led the Interior Ministry and its police force for almost 14 years under the rule of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, was the most reviled figure during the protests that toppled Egypt's leader for nearly 30 years. During the session that lasted for only 15 minutes, Al-Adli denied the charges of money laundering and profiteering waged against him, while the prosecution called for due punishment against him. Law experts say that the former Interior Minister may face between 3 and 15-year prison sentence if he was found guilty. Before the session starts, dozens of activists and relatives of victims of recent protests demonstrated outside the court, urging Al-Adli's execution.

French interior minister uses crime stats to justify Roma deportation - F24 0830

www.france24.com Latest update: 30/08/2010 - France - Roma people Govt minister uses crime stats to justify Roma deportation In response to the growing storm of condemnation over the deportation of Roma from France, interior minister Brice Hortefeux stated on Wednesday that crime perpetrated by Roma has skyrocketed over the past year. France's interior minister Brice Hortefeux said Wednesday that over the past 18 months crime committed by Roma people has increased by 259 percent in Paris alone. The minister's statement came after a flood of criticism and mounting party division over President Nicolas Sarkozy's summer campaign to dismantle illegal gypsy camps and to deport Roma on a large scale to Eastern Europe. The controversy has been fuelled by declarations by the president that link Roma, Gypsies and travelling people to crime. "Today, in Paris, the reality is that almost one in five perpetrators of a theft is a Romanian," Hortefeux said on Wednesday at the joint press conference with immigration minister Eric Besson. "This is not about stigmatising this or that population, but we cannot close our eyes to reality." Besson went on to say, "We must broaden the possibilities for issuing deportation orders (for people who pose) a threat to public order by repeated acts of theft or aggressive begging." Besson told reporters he planned to add two amendments to this end to an immigration bill that will be presented to parliament late next month. More than 100 Gypsy camps ...

The battle to reclaim Tahrir Square rages on

Clashes in Egypt's capital Cairo between protesters and security forces entered their third day on Monday and have left 22 people dead and hundreds wounded. Protestors can be seen outside the country's interior ministry calling for Egypt's ruling generals to step down. The violence erupted on Friday after police forces attempted to break up a sit in in Tahrir Square, an area that has been a major rallying point since the January uprising that saw the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak. Protestors have been resisting moves by the security forces to evacuate them from Tahrir Square and the clashes have proved to be deadly. The police has used brutal force in dealing with the demonstrators who have in turn been hurling stones from broken pavement as well as firebombs at law enforcement personnel. Police continue to hold a line around the Interior Ministry and fire tear gas canisters at protestors. Ahmed Sultan, a protestor, says the government and the ruling military council has ignored their demands. "These people here are being ignored, and crimes are being committed on Mohamed Mahmoud street [near the Interior Ministry] for two days and are still happening... The Military Council hasn't said anything, and the Cabinet hasn't said anything, and they are praising the role played by the Interior Ministry, saying 'thank you very much'. So we will stay here until we take our country back," said Ahmed. Another protester, Hazem Mahmoud, said the military should have handed ...

Mohamed Mahmoud Street, which runs east from Tahrir Square toward the Interior Ministry headquarters in central Cairo, has become the focal point of street fights between protesters and the black-clad Central Security Forces. For three days, protesters have been carried or driven back from the front line by comrades after coming under fire from rubber bullets and what they believe is either particularly potent or poisoned tear gas. At least 33 people have died across the country, according to the Health Ministry, many from tear gas asphyxiation. Doctors also believe that security forces have fired live ammunition. PML-N, MQM clash in National Assembly

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly turned into a virtual combat ground when Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan used offensive words and members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) vehemently reacted. The NA's session today was marked with rousing chaos when Muttahida's Sajid Ahmed and N-League's Abid Sher Ali exchanged hot words and were about to come to blows. Meantime, Leader of the Opposition in NA Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan warned they not be taught democracy here, as there is a party with no elections within. "Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani says there is no political prisoner in the country. Whose name is Afaq Ahmed, then?" Nisar asserted. "Zulfiqar Mirza said with the holy Quran on his head; accordingly, it is incumbent on me to accept it as a Muslim," PML-N's leader continued. The PML-N have not even thought of moving no-confidence motion; if so happens, the party will go to everyone save one, as it is sin to go to that party, Chaudhry Nisar noted. Muttahida's Asif Hasnain said he respects all leaders including Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Imran Khan and will continue doing so, adding arguments, quarrels and invectives lead democracy to a full stop. Today's session decided to form a committee with representation from political parties to resolve issues in connection with voter lists. Furthermore, Federal Interior Minister Rehman A. Malik said a cell would be set up at Interior Ministry for complaints over voter lists. Also, National Commission for Women Bill 2011 was tabled ...

Egypt - Cairo - Egypt's Days of Protest 26 01 2011

english.aljazeera.net www.ibtimes.com Egypt's interior ministry has warned that it will crack down on anti-government protesters if they take to the streets a day after massive and deadly demonstrations across the country called for an end to Hosni Mubarak's three-decade rule. Thousands of armoured police deployed at key locations around Cairo, the capital, on Wednesday in anticipation of renewed demonstrations, which some have called the most significant in Egypt since massive riots over the price of bread in the 1970s. Three protesters died in the port city of Suez, east of Cairo, during Tuesday's unrest, and a policeman was also killed when he was hit in the head with a rock in Cairo, an interior ministry official said. Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh, reporting from the Egyptian capital on Wednesday, said that the interior ministry had issued a statement banning further protests and threatening anyone encouraging them with investigation. More protests were still apparently being planned, though the streets of Cairo remained "absolutely quiet" as of midday Wednesday, Rageh reported. Violent clashes between police and protesters that began on Tuesday evening lasted into early Wednesday morning, as security services sought to disperse a crowd of thousands that had planned to sleep in Tahrir (Liberation) Square in central Cairo.

Clashes in al-Qatif Saudi Arabia leave 14 wounded

The Saudi Arabian government blamed an unnamed foreign power -- normally a code word for Iran -- for trying to stoke trouble in the heavily Shia-populated area around the city of al-Qatif after 14 people were injured in clashes on Monday. The accusation came from the interior ministry as it claimed on Tuesday that 11 security personnel were wounded when security forces clashed with protesters in the oil-rich eastern province, in an apparent fresh outbreak of protests by the country's Shia Muslim minority. "A group of instigators inspired by a foreign country gathered in al-Awwamiya village near Qatif at 9pm on Monday and tried to undermine security," an interior ministry official was quoted as saying in a statement to the Saudi press agency. The claim of foreign meddling highlights the potential for unrest in Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer, even though it has so far largely avoided the protests sweeping the Arab world. Rioters in the town of al-Awwamiya fired machine guns and hurled Molotov cocktails at members of the security force on Monday night, the Saudi press agency said. The rioters "need to clearly decided if their loyalty is to their homeland or to that state and its religious authorities", the interior ministry added. Mohamed al-Saeed, a Qatif resident, accused the Saudi state of ruthlessly suppressing the protest. He said in an email: "For the third day our families in Awwamiya town and Qatif live under brutal crackdown by Saudi forces, just ...

PROTEST AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY IN SKOPJE, MACEDONIA AWAKENS !

Several thousand people joined a rally in central Skopje Friday to protest the death of a young man allegedly beaten by a policeman during the celebration of an election victory. The protesters, mostly young people from various Macedonian towns, gathered to condemn "police brutality" that they said led to 22-year-old Martin Neshkoski's death on Sunday during street celebrations of the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party's victory in early parliamentary elections. They carried banners saying "Stop Police Brutality", "Do Not Beat Me" and "Stop Violence" while peacefully marching to the government building, interior ministry seat and the parliament. The protest was launched through social networking websites on Monday, with organisers saying they were not linked to any political parties. "Our demands are simple: eliminate police brutality, dismiss special police units and have independent civilian control over the interior ministry," Aleksandar Mitev, one of the organisers, told AFP. They also demanded that the policeman suspected of beating Neshkoski to death be "punished". Police spokesman Ivo Kotevski earlier said the investigation of the incident was under way, while a suspect -- a member of a special police unit Alfi -- had already surrendered volontarily to the authorities. Local media have blamed members of the Alfi unit of overstepping their powers and using violent methods during arrests.
