I recently purchased an Archos 43 4.3" Android Internet Tablet. It is a phone/PDA sized device with a 4.3" touchscreen and runs Android 2.2 (as of now anyways). I chose it because I wanted an Android device but didn't want to mess with expensive data plans or contracts. It really is a nice device, it has a fast 1GHz TI OMAP3630 ARM processor, 256MB of RAM, PowerVR SGX graphics, an 854x480 touchscreen (resistive/single-touch type), WiFi N, and Bluetooth. It also features USB host (USB OTG through micro port) and mini-HDMI connections. Archos released a special firmware called the Developer Edition which installs a bootloader that allows you to load a second operating system. The provided one is Angstrom Linux, a small distribution they threw together for demo purposes. It isn't very useful and many things don't work right, so I found a way to install Debian on it thanks to Debian-Archos and OpenAOS. The Debian distribution comes with OpenOffice, which allows for full-blown document editing right on the device, Microsoft format compatibility, and is free. What Works: ARM CPU and Linux kernel TI WiFi chip Touchscreen (calibration is necessary on Archos 43, but I have added it to my image) PowerVR SGX framebuffer (OpenGL and graphics acceleration are not available, but the framebuffer is optimized for the graphics chip. With there now being five (oh yes, five!) Archos Android Internet Tablets on the market, it's understandably hard to keep 'em all straight, but in our minds the 32 is easy to separate from the rest -- it, along with the 28, is more of an Android PMP than anything else. With 3.2 inches of resistive touchscreen, the 32 packs the specs of a typical media player: 8GB of storage, media player software with support for loads of audio and video formats, and a VGA camera. But unlike most, it runs Android 2.1 (2.2 will be a firmware update, we're told), which adds quite a bit more functionality in terms of applications and web browsing. And it's also got an accelerometer for playing games. At $150, it seems like a pretty good deal, especially when you consider that it's cheaper than an iPod Touch or even a Zune HD (depending on where you're shopping), but there are a few issues that may hold you back from forking over the cash. You'll want to check out our full review after the break to find out just what those are. Look and feel When powered off, the Archos 32 looks like the company's typical music player -- it's primarily crafted of black plastic, though the back is made of some sort of brushed metal. So if you've ever heard of the company Archos you might know they have an Internet Tablet lineup. That lineup is mainly with their generation 8 devices. The gen8 devices come with Android 2.2 Froyo. But those who own a generation 7 tablet are stuck with Androlid 1.6 Donut. The sad thing is Archos isn't very good at updating firmware on older devices so Archos 5 Internet Tablet users are pretty much stuck with Donut. It comes with HDMI output and full video and audio codecs support up to MKV 720p high profile and high bitrate support (which I will test in my upcoming next videos).
