New intiative at Mombasa to decongest port
Efforts to improve the online cargo clearance system at the port of Mombasa are well underway following calls by traders to have a more efficient system.This follows plans to overhaul the current Simba system to have it replaced with the proposed National Single Window system courtesy of the Kenya Trade Network Agency.The system which is expected to be implemented by December this year has higher functionality and is hoped it will lower delays as being experienced by the current system. Speaking in Mombasa at a workshop, Kentrade chairman retired Major Joseph Kibwana says the system will be a boost for traders as this will lower the cost of doing business for traders.The system will create a platform for submission, receipt and processing of trade related cargo clearance documentation.The electronic platform will be the sole entry point for lodging trade transaction documents and will integrate over 24 government agencies that include Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

Youth Violence Prevention Intiative: Brooklyn Park, Zanewood
In the summer of 2009 the Brooklyn Park City Council began its fight against youth violence. Leaders knew that waging this war would mean building a new initiative focused on redesigning city resources. Mayor Lampi took the lead and created the Brooklyn Bridge Alliance; Council member Gates traveled to Boston's National League of Cities conference on youth and families. Each council member was and continues to be a key champion in leading this initiative. From the onset the strategy was clear: Reduce youth violence by increasing opportunities. Initiative leaders scanned the country for best practices in youth violence prevention. Their search resulted in adopting the city of Minneapolis "Blueprint for action" framework for reducing youth violence. This framework recognized that youth violence is a disease -- one that can be fought. The medicine for youth violence has four elements: connect youth to trusted adults, intervene at the first sign of risk, restore youth who have gone down the wrong path and unlearn a culture of violence. With the creation of the Youth Opportunities Coalition and the opening of Zanewood Recreation Center the YVPI was able to connect and intervene with thousands of youth.

Bikes in Schools - a Bike On intiative
This is a rough cut of the mini-documentary about Bike On's Bikes in Schools pilot. Bike On founder Paul McArdle has privately funded 62 bikes, 225 helmets, a brand new bike shed and 3 tracks to provide the students of St Mary's School in Hastings, New Zealand to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. The three tracks include a bike skills track for balance and co-ordination and a 550 metre, 2 metre wide limestone track that gently meander around the perimeter of the school field. After three weeks with the Bikes in Schools pilot, staff of the primary school have already commented on increased confidence in several areas for many of their students.
