My Main Point: It's a dependable experience that I'd pick over any other phone even though it's not the fastest phone available and I'm getting kinda bored of the way iOS looks. It's the most intuitive phone available, and "it just works!" I don't think it's worth an upgrade from an iPhone 4, but I definitely recommend the phone if you're coming from any other phone or a previous generation iPhone. iPhone 4S Review - Worthy Upgrade? There's a huge sense of familiarity when holding the iPhone 4S. Following the device's announcement, it was decried by a large portion of consumers -- "It's the same phone!" -- and to an extent, they were correct. Comparing the iPhone 4S to last year's model side-by-side, there's virtually no discernible difference between the two; it's much the same way Apple handled the 3G and 3GS upgrade. Although the iPhone 4S may not have been the upgrade folks were looking for, that doesn't mean it hasn't enjoyed tremendous popularity since it went on sale. Judging by the numbers, familiarity can sometimes be a good thing, especially when you consider the iPhone 4′s excellent design, something most companies have still yet to match. The internals are the real story, however, as much has been improved since last year's model, including a faster processor, upgraded camera and the all new Siri voice assistant. We've had the iPhone 4S for a little under a week, and while there is a noticeable difference between the 4 and 4S when loading applications and browsing the web, it isn't mind-blowingly faster. Apple gave a lot of attention to Siri and her capabilities, touting its convenience and ease-of-use. While Siri is good fun and does make tasks like setting appointments, speech-to-text and checking weather easier, I often found myself forgetting about the new software altogether. Familiar is a good term for the exterior of the iPhone 4S. When the 4 was unveiled in the summer of 2010 it was a strikingly different design from anything else on the market -- glass on the front and back, exposed screws holding together a deliciously clean ring of stainless steel. It was kind of chunky and industrial, like a tastefully refinished factory loft -- a big contrast to the smooth and nondescript models that came before. The iPhone 4 was something truly new and, for the days and weeks after its release, just spotting one in the wild caused a sensation. It was so different that people wanted to touch and hold the thing, to see how it felt in the hand. Few are going to go out of their way to touch and hold the iPhone 4S, but that's not to say it isn't very nice to grasp. The iPhone 4 felt like a finely crafted piece of machinery and there's no doubt this one walks in those very same footsteps. Compared to your average modern Android wunderphone the 4S feels small, dense and heavy, a very different sensation than the occasionally lighter but frequently more plasticky competition. The 4S does actually have slightly more heft than the 4, but only by carefully holding one in each hand can you notice the increase from 137 grams (4.83 ounces) to 140 (4.94 ounces). Save for a few tweaks that even the most dedicated Appleista wouldn't be able to spot at a distance, the 4S is identical from the exterior. Besides the CDMA chipset and revised antenna design, not much has changed under the hood - it still offers Apple's A4 processor, a 3.5-inch Retina Display, 5-megapixel camera with HDR capabilities, front-facing camera for FaceTime, and iOS 4.2. It's available as of February 10, 2011 for $199 for the 16 GB model, and $299 for the 32 GB unit. While it doesn't support simultaneous voice and data like the AT&T iPhone does, it offers Mobile Hotspot capabilities for an additional fee. The question remains, though - will a device that's half a year old beat industry flagships like the Motorola DROID Bionic, LG Optimus 2X, and HTC Thunderbolt? Likely the toughest of all iPhone cases, the Defender is now available for the iPhone 4. The Defender offers multiple layers of protection for your iPhone in less than ideal usage. The first layer is a two-piece hardshell with a felt backing. The shell features a built-in film screen shield to protect the iPhone screen.
