The earthquake occurred 130 kilometres (81 mi) east of Sendai, Honshu, Japan. Its epicenter was 373 kilometres (232 mi) from Tokyo, according to the United States Geological Survey. A 7.1 magnitude aftershock was reported 40 minutes following the initial quake.At least twenty aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 or greater have occurred since the initial quake. Initially reported as 7.9 by the USGS, the magnitude was quickly restated as 8.8 and then 8.9. The effects of the quake included visible smoke rising from a building in the Port of Tokyo. Shinkansen bullet train services in and out of Tokyo were suspended, though no derailments have happened while Narita and Haneda Airport has both suspended operation after the quake, with majority of flights diverted to other airports until further notice. Various train services around Japan were also canceled. An oil refinery was set ablaze by the quake at Ichihara, Chiba prefecture to the east of Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has said that nuclear power plants have shut down, but that no radioactive material leaked.

There's a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It's the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. Cars were simply washed away, crashing into each other and buildings. More than 1400 people were killed by the quake and resulting tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10000.

In Japan, radiation levels in the seawater near the Fukushima plant continue to rise. They're now more than 3.5 thousand times higher than normal. Radioactive material has also been detected in soil at the facility. Japan's government described the situation as serious and unpredictable. Casualties: Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) has confirmed at least 1000 dead and another 88000 missing in six different prefectures. By 09:30 March 11 UTC, Google Person Finder, which was previously used in the Haiti, Chile, and Christchurch earthquakes, was collecting information about survivors and their locations. It has been confirmed that two passenger trains containing an unknown number of passengers disappeared in a coastal area during the tsunami. It has also been confirmed that a ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami. The current status of the ship is still unknown. Four were swept out to sea by the tsunami off the coast of Crescent City, California, United States, near the Oregon border, with two of them later found alive, one still missing, and one dead. A man who was taking pictures of the tsunami waves on the Northern California coast was also swept out to sea and is missing.
