I personally do not like to use that word, period. It doesn't matter whether you're using it for discriminatory ways or to just shorten the word "Japanese." I dislike it. While some people find it okay, many others hate it. However as more Asians came to the US, jobs were taken away from white Americans so they started to use the shorten terms is an offensive manner. "Chinks" and "Japs" became a racial slur, similar to today's "Wetbacks" describing Latin Americans. The slur didn't become mainstream until WW2 when the Allied forces used the term "Jap" as a propaganda tool to negate the image of the Japanese. That is then when ordinary citizens started to use it as an offensive word (Search "No Japs Wanted" on Google Images). If you look at some, it's similar to the signs of "No Negroes Allowed".
