Universities constitute a major source of knowledge and research and innovation. They are an exceptional source that is little taken advantage of in France. Our goal is to develop from now on relationships between the industrial world, business and the world of knowledge. The objective is to be a leader on several key subjects, and for this, large businesses will play an important role. First of all they already have experience working with certain universities, and they have human and financial resources to take on this type of policy. They have a number of relationships with sub-contractors and SMEs. They must become leaders and trainers and should in the future move forward with this goal in mind. What progress must French universities make to fulfill their potential? First of all, universities must take advantage of their newfound autonomy. This implies a lot of change. They must become entrepreneurial, change their governance and hire people from the private sector. It's a revolution and it has started. I'm surprised to see so many dynamic university presidents. Universities must open up their departments to each other. Learning is too compartmentalized while life is much more complicated and multi-disciplinary.
