EDUPUNK Battle Royale - Part 1

Edupunk, as defined by the New York Times, is "an approach to teaching that avoids mainstream tools like Powerpoint and Blackboard, and instead aims to bring the rebellious attitude and DIY ethos of 70s bands like the Clash to the classroom." The term was coined by Jim Groom, Instructional Technology Specialist at the University of Mary Washington. His friend and colleague is Gardner Campbell, Director of the Academy for Teaching and Learning at Baylor University. They dont agree on the metaphor and go head-to-head on the concept of Edupunk.

Jim Groom at Kansas State University: 2012

Edupunk Jim Groom discusses learning and technology. This special guest speaker was brought to K-State by Michael Wesch The educator who coined the term edupunk -- teaching and learning with a do-it-yourself attitude -- came to Kansas State University and discussed his use of digital tools to improve learning. "As a popular blogger, tweeter and speaker, Jim Groom is somewhere near the center of the vast network of thoughtful educators and technologists exploring and experimenting with new ways to leverage digital tools for learning in higher education," said Michael Wesch, associate professor of cultural anthropology. "Many people in the field simply call him 'The Reverend.'" Wesch brought Groom to K-State as part of his activities as the university's 2011-2012 Coffman chair for distinguished teaching scholars. "Jim has always been years ahead of the curve, and is one of the main reasons for the widely envied success of the University of Mary Washington blogging platform and the rich culture of learning and technology culture that is present on that campus," Wesch said. "Joe McMahon once said of him, perhaps only half jokingly, 'Generations from now, they won't call it the Internet anymore. They'll just say, "I logged on to the Jim Groom this morning.'"

Telling A Story Using Only Sound Effects

Nonverbal Communication Project - I made this for a speech class at school; using various sound effects that I found off the web and take no credit for. I do take credit for putting it all together and making this short story. Enjoy! PS - In case anyone doesn't understand a part of the story or is just curious, here are the events that happen in the story: 1. alarm clock goes off 2. man yawns as he wakes up 3. gets up and walks to bathroom 4. washes face 5. walks to kitchen and pours cereal 6. eats cereal 7. dog barks 8. drops bowl for dog 9. feeds dog by pouring dog food into bowl 10.doorbell rings and someone knocks on door 11.walks to door and opens door 12.looks at papers 13.signs papers 14.closes door and takes package 15.opens package, inside of package is a video game cartridge (NES) 16.runs to TV and turns it on 17.tries playing the video game, but does not work 18.blows on game cartridge in order to make it work 19.game starts playing 20.starts laughing while playing 21.phone rings 22.turns off game 23.answers phone 24.listens to mumbling 25.hangs up and slams phone 26.finds car keys 27.runs out the door and slams door 28.opens car door and then closes it after getting in 29.turns on car and leaves 30.begins to accelerate 31.police siren starts to sound 32.slows down and stops car 33.officer taps on car window 34.driver opens window while heartbeat becomes louder 35.hears alarm clock, again? 36.sighs in relief that it was all a dream. end.

News on the March - Target: Jim Groom

Sectionalism rocks the Oblivionite camp, as TA Jim Groom goes mad with power and banishes DS106ers en masse! The family Oblivion bickers while DS106 burns, and so clearly new leadership is needed. First martyr to the cause, after the Oblivions, is Araba, who was banished from DS106 after questioning Groom's seemingly absolute authority. So let it be noted in the annals of history that DS106 is hereby dissolved, its power over our minds illusory and its message of total student domination illegitimate. From the ashes of DS106 arises a new order, DS107, led by none, controlled by none, for the benefit of all who seek relief from the oppression of the TA. We are the true heirs to the legacy of Dr. Oblivion, and we declare before the world that our purpose is to depose the monster and see him displayed in chains for all to see! With that in mind, carry on the legacy of Dr. Oblivion with your radio and video assignments, as we wait in joyful hope for his return to us. With Oblivion on our side, we cannot fail. And to all enemies of DS107 - seek not to bar our way, for we shall win through, no matter the cost.

News on the March: Springtime for Jim Groom

We begin a new semester at the University of Mary Washington, and with it a new incarnation of DS 106. Apparently unsatisfied with last summer's successful totally online format, TA-turned-full-teacher Jim Groom appears to be taking a hybrid approach, demanding time of his students both on- and offline. This semester we have a new instructor in Alan Levine, better known as @cogdog, who will be teaching us DS 106 from another perspective, this one never before seen at Mary Washington. In other news, two students are working to document the proceedings of DS 106 in the classroom. The first of hopefully many such videos is available on YouTube, far beyond the reach of any potential censors. Remember that during your time at DS 106 you will be joined by many unofficial course takers: educators, tech-heads, former students and several other unsavory types. These people are here to enrich the course for you, providing constructive criticism, technical help and a sense of community from which you will inevitably benefit. This has been News on the March. Stay tuned throughout the semester for further updates.
