BBC Proms 2010 - John Wilson Orchestra - Rogers & Hammerstein's 'Oklahoma!' overture

I thought I would like to share this short video snippet from last years BBC Prom concerts that run throughout the summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London. One of the highlights of last years season was John Wilson conducting his specially assembled orchestra featuring the music of Rogers and Hammerstein - probably the most famous music collaborations in history. The amazingly talented conductor and arranger John Wilson assembled this huge orchestra specially for this concert and in doing so recreated the massive studio orchestras that existed to record some of the most famous soundtrack music in cinema history. Larry Jon Wilson: Canoochee Revisit/Ohoopee River Bottomland

Larry Jon Wilson, a singer/songwriter somewhere between Tony Joe White and Jim Croce, cut four LPs in the second half of the 1970s, none of which sold many copies (New Beginnings, Let Me Sing My Song To You, Loose Change, Sojourner). It's hard to understand why, because he's simply great. Luckily enough director James Szalapski filmed him doing the self-penned "Ohoopee River Bottomland" in a recording studio in 1975 for his movie "Heartworn Highways", a must-have for any fan of the mid-seventies new country scene. Other performances include singer/songwriters Townes van Zandt, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Johny Hiatt, David Allan Coe, a very young Steve Earle, Charlie Daniel Band and Barefoot Jerry with "Two Mile Hike", yet another hard to get piece of great music. The movie is available on a 2003 dvd in an extended version. Larry Jon Wilson still performs occasionally and cut two great songs for the album "The Country Soul Revue - Testifying", produced by Dan Penn. PS: Somehow the sound wasn't on the clip, so I edited it from the soundtrack. Update: The new cd "Larry Jon Wilson" was released on 1965 Records in July 2008. Larry Jon passed away this afternoon, June 21st, 2010. A sad day for those who loved him. A day of reflection on the gifts he shared. Larry Jon was born on October 7, 1940, in Swainsboro, in Emmanuel County, to Louise Phillips and John Tyler Wilson. Larry Jon was raised in Augusta, Georgia. He attended high school at Carlisle Military Academy in Bamberg, South Carolina, before attending the University of Georgia, where he majored in chemistry. From 1963 to 1973 he worked in Langley, South Carolina, for United Merchants and Manufacturers as a technical consultant in fiberglass manufacturing. "Back then I was making money - now I'm making music," he said once, after taking up music as his calling. At the age of thirty, Wilson received his first guitar and taught himself to play. Four years later. By then a husband and the father of three children, he decided to try to make his living by making music. In the second half of the 1970s he had 4 great records out on the Monument label - New Beginnings, Let Me Sing My Song To You, Loose Change and Sojourner. His compositions reflect his experiences, and many focus on his southern childhood. One writer called them "eloquent, elegiac songs of the South." Of his first album, the critic for the Saturday Review in New York said, "Larry Jon Wilson's New Beginnings is, to sum up, the best thing I have heard in country, rock, pop, or you-name-it for a very long time." BBC Proms 2010 - John Wilson orchestra - The Sound of Music title theme

This is another very well known piece of music taken from the BBC Proms Rogers and Hammerstein concert of 2010 featuring the John Wilson Orchestra with the addition of the Maida Vale Singers. Perhaps one of the most recognisable movie themes of all time to certainly the most successful Hollywood musical film ever made - 'The Sound of Music'. John Wilson goes to great lenghts recreating the big studio orchestra sound that accompanied these big movies when they were made. No exception here with the addition of The Maida Vale Singers providing the angelic voices of the Nuns in the convent choir to the main theme of the movie.
