Erna Sack & Mado Robin: The Highest Notes

Outside the "Peruvian nightingale" Yma Sumac and her unique and phenomenal "double-voiced trill" (in "Chuncho"), the "highest" singers were "the German nightingale" Erna Sack, and the French "stratospheric colaratura" Mado Robin. Both sopranos could reach easily C above high C, but the latter could emit even higher and incredible notes, and always clearly and powerfully. Listen to those extracts from "Frühlingsstimmen" ("Voices of spring") and "Carnival of Venice" and prick up your ears!

Saami Musical Tribute

Here is a beautiful song, "Gula Gula", by Norway's greatest Saami singer, Mari Boine. Mari Boine Persen is known for having added jazz and rock to the yoiks (traditional singing style) of her native people. Boine (born in 1956) grew up amidst discrimination against her people. She was asked to perform at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, but refused because she perceived the invitation as an attempt to bring a token minority to the ceremonies. "Gula Gula" (1989) was her breakthrough release (her album was discovered by Peter Gabriel), and she continued to record popular albums throughout the 1990's. She is gifted with a magnificent voice, highly delicate and able to reach an absolutely phenomenal guttural power. Enjoy this little tribute to the great and beautiful Saami culture!

Russian Basso Profondo: The Lowest Voices

Here are two short extracts of an exceptional record of Russian choral work (which includes anonymous ancient liturgical chant, popular folk songs, and music by well known Russian choral composers, such as Tchesnokov and Gretchaninov), introducing some of the lowest voices in the world. The two singers here are Vladimir Pasuikov and, with an even lower voice, Yuri Wichniakov, one of the most famous Basso Profondo, who are unique to Russian singing. Their vocal range is at least one octave below the normal bass range (think Paul Robeson). In the first extract the bass hits the low Ab1; in the second the bass hits a G1. Not only do they possess the lowest notes of any choral singer, but the soloists have such full voices that the effect is immediately striking. Enjoy those exceptional samples of the magnificent Russian choral art!

She had more straight jazz sessions with Clark Terry, Oliver Nelson and others on the Prestige, Mainstream, Tru-Sound and Hi-Q labels. Enjoy Clea's style!

Kinshi Tsuruta: Epic recitation of the genre Satsuma-Biwa

Recitations of epics date from the 17th century and owe their name to the province of Satsuma (southern Japan), as well as to the pear-shaped lute biwa. This extract tells of one of the numerous battle episodes between the Heike and Genji clans during the 12th century. Kinshi Tsuruta is the most famous of such performers. She has a particularly deep voice: she sings in the chest register, whilst switching to head voice to execute the ornaments. Enjoy her artistry and the beauty of Japanese culture and art!

Lyudmila Zykina: Oh, When I Recall

Lyudmila Georgievna Zykina is a national folk singer of Russia and a real institution. She was born in Moscow in 1929. Ironically, her surname is derived from the Russian word for "loud". One of asteroids is named after Lyudmila Zykina. Kim Young-im: Jeongseon Arirang (정선 아리랑)

Here is a beautiful song by one of South Korea's most renowned traditional singers, the gorgeous Kim Young-im. This song is a South Korean local version of the song Arirang, probably the most famous and popular Korean folk song with many versions (this one has been sung in Jeongseon County for more than 600 years). Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. "Ari" means "beautiful", "Rang" can mean "dear". Because of those words, Arirang could be interpreted to mean "beautiful dear". Arirang is a mountain in Korea. The song performed here comes from the beautiful Korean film "Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom" ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring") from 2004. Listen to the incredibly powerful voice of Kim Young-im and enjoy the beauty of Korean music and culture!
