Taliban deadly offensive in Kabul

It is being described as the biggest attack in Kabul in the last 11 years as the Taliban easily penetrated one of the most secure parts of the country. Fighting continued for almost 18 hours and defence officials say 36 fighters were killed and 18 captured in the capital Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan. Afghan security sources reveal that that for the past five days the attackers had smuggled explosives and weapons into this site hidden in cement bags and paint pots. Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, called the attacks an intelligence failure both for his government and NATO forces. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from Kabul.

'US wanted Taliban attacks to happen in Kabul'

The Taliban has launched a series of coordinated attacks across the Afghan capital on Sunday, including an assault on the presidential palace, the Afghan Parliament and NATO headquarters. Most of the targets were in the city's diplomatic district, with western embassies and residences under fire. 32 insurgent fighters and two police officers were killed in the violence, while dozens more were injured. The military airport at Jalalabad in the east of the country has also been hit, while violence has been reported in two other provinces. The Taliban says the attacks were retaliation for the actions of US troops, including the burning of the Koran and the recent massacre of 17 Afghan civilians. Kabul Afghanistan Attacks (15 April 2012)

Attackers in Afghanistan launched a coordinated wave of assaults Sunday, targeting a heavily protected district of the capital that includes embassies and the presidential palace, as well as trying to strike an airbase used by American troops, officials said. Government facilities, and the American, German and Russian embassies in Kabul were targeted, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said, saying up to seven locations were attacked. Insurgents also took over a building in front of the Afghan parliament and began firing at it, the Kabul police chief's office said in a statement. But police headed off some attacks, arresting two potential suicide bombers and their handler, and destroying a vehicle full of explosives, the statement said. They confessed to being members of the Haqqani network, police said. The insurgent group sometimes allies itself with the Taliban but is a separate movement. At least 13 insurgents were killed in four different locations around the country, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said. Fourteen Afghan police officers were injured, he said. Another 15 would-be attackers were arrested in Kunduz province plotting similar strikes, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a spokesman for the chief of police for north and northeast Afghanistan. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying tens of suicide bombers were carrying them out in Kabul and three provinces around the country. Taliban launches largest attack on Kabul in 11 years

KABUL: Heavily-armed Taliban suicide bombers today unleashed a wave of coordinated attacks in Afghanistan with several explosions and gunfire rocking the diplomatic area and Parliament in Kabul and three other cities but no Indian target was attacked. According to India's ambassador to Afghanistan Gautam Mukhopadhyay, all Indians were safe. ITBP director general Ranjit Sinha said there was no threat to the Indian embassy as it was located three to four km away from the scene of the attack this afternoon by the Taliban gunmen who came from different directions in perhaps an unprecedented assault of this nature. Taliban claimed responsibility for around a dozen attacks by the gunmen in central Kabul which has stunned Afghan authorities. Any casualties is still unknown but Kabul police chief Mohammad Ayoubi Salangi was quoted as having said one attacker had been killed near the Parliament. The militants attacked five-star Kabul Star Hotel in Wazir Akhbar Khan area of the capital and some tried to enter the Afghan parliament firing rockets but were engaged by security forces and driven back, officials said. An unknown number of Taliban men armed with light and heavy weapons targeted Afghan governmental and International offices in three different areas of Kabul, police said. A number of Taliban militants took positions at a newly-build building at the Shahr-e-Naw, a neighborhood of Kabul. They battled with Afghan forces for several hours after the militants began assaulting ...

TALIBAN'S ATTACK IN KABUL - APRIL 15,2012

A series of attacks in the Afghan capital Kabul were in retaliation for Koran burnings, a US Marine urination video and the Kandahar massacre, the Taliban has reportedly claimed. The co-ordinated strikes on Sunday targeted Nato's headquarters, the city's parliament building and a number of diplomatic residences - including the British and US embassies. President Hamid Karzai is also reported to be under lockdown and MPs have been among those fighting back against the onslaught, with some standing with Afghan forces to shoot at insurgents. "These attacks are the beginning of the spring offensive and we planned them for months," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has been quoted as saying. Some fighting is still on-going between militants and Afghan police across the city, but hours after the initial explosions and gunfire, reports said only two attackers had died. Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said Afghan forces captured two suicide bombers as they headed for targets in Kabul. Reports said these two attackers were trying to reach the home of one of President Karzai's two deputies, Mohammad Karim Khalili. Afghan security forces, who are responsible for the safety of the capital, have been leading the response to the attacks around the city. Earlier, several explosions rocked the US, British and German embassies and a Nato military base in a central neighbourhood of the capital. One report said a rocket-propelled grenade had hit the residence of the ...
