The weapon of choice for soldiers and rebels alike, the Kalashnikov assault rifle went into mass production six decades ago. Today, more than 100 million AK47s have been sold worldwide. Its huge success is due to its simplicity and ease of maintenance, all thanks to its Russian inventor - Mikhail Kalashnikov. Now the man who invented it is celebrating his 90th brithday. Al Jazeera correspondent Neave Barker visited Kalashnikov's home town of Izhevsk to meet the man and the significance and consequences of his invention.

The frame with me holding the AK with my finger on the trigger was a different cut than myself racking the bolt. Had I racked then placed my finger on the trigger then you could yell at me, but don't be rude and disrespectful because you feel the need to assume I don't know proper gun safety.

Putin praises new Kalashnikov AK-200 Assault rifle
State tests of a new model of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, or AK, will be held in Russia next year, media reports said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Russian security forces have already signaled their readiness to purchase the sophisticated AK-200, which, experts said, will be based on the AK-74 version. On Tuesday, the AK-200's advanced characteristics were appreciated by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who visited the Izmash mechanical plant in the Russian Urals city of Izhevsk, where the legendary Kalashnikovs are currently assembled. Alexander Baditsa, an Izhmash spokesman, explains: "The AK-200 is designed to contribute to a full-blown modernization of the Russian Armed Forces. Significantly, the new model is based on the AK-74, internationally known for its reliability and ease of use , the AK-200's sophisticated design is fully in tune with new demands for waging modern warfare. The new Kalashnikov differs in weight and the magazine capacity, citing a 60-cartridge magazine the AK-200 is equipped with. It is safe to assume that the new Kalashnikov's characteristics are on a par with those of assault rifles currently used by NATO troops." The world's most widely used assault rifle, the Kalashnikov remains the weapon of choice for more than 20 countries, experts say. It is even featured on the coat-of-arms of four countries, they add, citing at least 70 million Kalashnikov assault rifles produced across the globe in the past. This is the 3rd part of the Kalashnikov's story. Kalashnikov: "Then I have opposed changing assault rifle caliber from 7.62 to 5.45mm. I have written a number of letters with the explanation, why 7.62x39 mm round must follow to be on service. It is far from exhausting its capabilities. But they started accuse me in 'retrogradeness', 'conservatism' and 'hostility to progress'. His position was grounded by the fact that the new caliber (5.45x39) has too low penetrating capability against some kinds of targets, while the AKM's bullet (7.62x39) is even penetrating the light armor. However, the constructor could not stand alone and have taken part in the tender for the assault rifle with the new 5.45 mm round. The short list of that tender had two assault rifles: Kalashnikov (AK-74) and Konstantinov (AEK-971 prototype). Sergey Plotnikov, the senior researcher of the Central Military museum (Russia): "The Konstantinov's assault rifle has a prominent shortage. Its reloading needs efforts by more than 5 kg". In result, the (Army) client preferred Izhevsk's Kalashnikov. March, 18, 1974 the USSR government decided to put the new AK-74 on service. In 5 years it has confirmed its high quality. My review of a new firearms-themed fighting fixed blade by Boker. The Kalashnikov 10 fixed blade reminds me of a budget version of the TOPS Screaming Eagle. It is a nice item for a moderate price ($47). It is strong, with a full tang, and has an American tanto tip that gives it extreme penetration power.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS AT wp.me Kalashnikov have unveiled the latest incarnation of their iconic assault rifle, the AK-47. The company says new generation firearm called the AK-12 combines reliability with precision, and can be used with one hand. The factory which developed the new rifle decided to stick with the classic layout of the AK-47, even though it is a completely new weapon. The Kalashnikov makers claim its has better range, increased fire dispersion, better ergonomics, usability and a potential for configuration changes. The new weapon is as reliable as the AK-74, the Izmash factory CEO Maksim Kuzyuk says, but the dynamic characteristics differ significantly. It considerably increases the accuracy of shooting. The rifle is capable of firing in three modes: single shot, three shots and automatic fire mode. Also, AK-12 is capable of using magazines of various types and capacity. The basic feature of the new rifle is its modularity. It will serve as a basic platform for designing of over 20 modifications of small-arms weapons of various purpose and calibre. AK-12's composition allows operating it single-handedly, and can be converted for left or right handed use. The rifle can accommodate night vision and Holo-sights, target indicator, or a light grenade launcher. The AK-12 is undergoing firing tests in extreme conditions which should be completed by the end of the year.
