Israel Kamakawiwo'ole The Starfish Ka Hôkû Kai [kah HOH' KOO' kai] Once upon a time, there was a wise kupuna (elder), who went to the sea to contemplate. One day, while walking along the shore, the kupuna looked down the beach, and saw a gracefully dancing human figure. The kupuna wondered out loud, "Who would so joyfully greet this day with hula?" and began to walk faster to catch up. Getting closer, the kupuna saw that the dancer was a keiki (child), who was not dancing at all. The keiki was reaching down to the sand to pick up something, and was very gently throwing it into the sea. The kupuna called out to the keiki, "Aloha! What are you doing?" The keiki paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the sea." Surprised, the kupuna sputtered, "I...I guess I should have asked, WHY are you throwing starfish into the sea?" The keiki smiled brightly, pointed upward and, with exquisite simplicity, replied, "The sun is up, the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they will die." "But, don't you realize, " asked the kupuna, "that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!" The keiki listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it gently into the sea, just beyond the breaking waves, and exuberantly declared, "It made a difference for that one."

Israel Kamakawiwi'ole was one of the most beloved singer songwriter musician philosophers in Hawaii's history. Despite his size, clearly out of control in later years eventually leading to his death, he was a true legend and icon of Hawaiian music. His songs inspired people of all ages, and many kids headed for trouble looked to Brother Iz as role model. Kamakawiwi'ole did have some runins as a youth, which made his later example all the more meaningful, not just for young, but people in all walks of life and ages. One of his most inspirational messages was "When you think no can, can." Which was his way of saying just when things seem toughest, there is still hope if you hold on and have faith. His body rested in state in the Hawaii's Capital Building, one of, if not the only Hawaiian musician ever so honored.

Guest Contributor/Writer to RWM - Jeff Reeves: Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a Hawaiian artist named Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, known as Bruddah IZ to his family, friends, and fans. Over the past 15 years, IZ has been considered a heavenly voice of inspiration to many, a prominent voice in Hawaii's search for sovereignty, and a legend in Hawaiian culture. Known as "The Gentle Giant", IZ was loved by everyone. But like other talented artists, he died young at the age of 38 because of respiratory problems due to his obesity, once weighing over 750 lbs. He has made renditions, such as Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," still in the top 50 on Hawaiian billboard charts. He also made a beautiful rendition of Judy Garland's "Somewhere over the Rainbow." Search for it on YouTube; it is everywhere. It gives a spiritual and reenergized feeling to the old song. In 1997, over 10000 fans paid tribute to him at his funeral. He is one of three people to have had his casket rest at the Capitol building, the other two being political figures. The song I wish to share with everyone today is instrumental, meaningful, and uplifting. "Living in a Sovereign Land" is IZ's way of celebrating Hawaiian's history, culture, and individuality. Through his vocals, he expresses Hawaiian desire and deservedness of sovereign rule. His ukulele playing is stylishly reggae, uplifting, and simple.
