Healthy Teeth: How to Keep Teeth and Gums Healthy

Learn how to keep teeth and gums healthy in this dental care video. Expert: Shane Methal, DDS Video transcript: Hi, my name is Dr. Shane Methal, here at Greene Street Dental in SoHo, New York. I've been in private practice both in Maryland and consequently back in New York for the last 17 years. My office website is www.greenestreetdental.com, that's green with an "e" at the end, and today I'm going to be talking about teeth and dentistry. Healthy teeth: How to keep teeth and gums healthy First it's important to do the obvious, and that is brush and floss effectively. Ideally you should brush at least two times a day and floss those hard to reach in-between-the-teeth areas at least one time a day. You can use either a manual or an electric toothbrush, depending on what's right for you. One of the biggest components to dental problems is diet. You want to avoid sugary sweets, snacks, coffee, soda, anything that contains what we call fermentable carbohydrates. These are the sugars that bacteria in your mouth eat, produce acid and as a result produce cavities. This is why we brush and floss to remove this plaque. In regards to your gums, it's also important to brush correctly. Make sure you see your dentist at least two times a year, sometimes three and sometimes four to maintain excellent oral hygiene. www.cleanpik.com Cleanpik - Comfort FlossBrush • NEW! Interdental Brush (0,7mm) makes deep cleaning easy. • NEW! Thinner Floss slides easily between teeth. Resists stretching and breaking. • Angle Neck designed to reach back teeth with wider handle. • Angle pick. How to use the Cleanpik Comfort BrushPicks? Instructions Brush: Insert between interdental spaces, or dental appliances. Use a soft back and forth motion to remove plaque and food particles. Rinse after use. Pick: Place pick between teeth and gently press against the gum. Use an in and out motion to remove food particles and stimulate gums. Rinse after use. Floss: Guide the floss between two teeth and gently press the handle with your fingers. If your teeth are very close together and the floss would not fit in, you may try to bite the handle gently. Do this slowly in order not to damage your gums. The floss is held under slight tension to avoid damaging the gums between the teeth. Once you get Cleanpik between two teeth, hold the floss gently against the tooth and move it away from the gum with up and down motions. This will ensure gentle and effective removal of food particles and plaque. Remove the floss in the same gentle way. Always floss the most difficult to reach spaces last. Rinse after use.

Handling Periodontal Disease

Dr Joseph Sarkissian - www.SarkissianDDS.com - passes on this important information about the importance to keep your gums healthy The World Health Organization 2003 and 2006 reports, indicate that over 85 percent of adults in the United States have gum disease. Most dont even realize it. In the beginning, symptoms can be slight, a little bleeding when you brush your teeth or puffy gums. But if not dealt within the early stages, periodontal disease can lead to receding gums, lost teeth and chronic bad breath. Studies have also discovered an association between infected gums and other dangerous health conditions. Scientists have published over a 1000 studies showing a possible link between gum disease and systematic illnesses like heart disease, respiratory disease, blood clots, strokes, diabetes and other dangerous health conditions.

lasergumdentist.com How Your Dentist Could Save Your Life More info lasergumdentist.com Plenty of evidence now shows that the state of your teeth and gums have a serious impact on your overall health, writes DR MERVYN DRUIAN. Gum disease, for example, is linked to a raised risk of heart disease, stroke and premature birth. Here's why you should make sure you are up-to-date with your dental appointments. HEART DISEASE It sounds unlikely, but bad teeth, bleeding gums and poor dental hygiene can end up causing heart disease. Several studies confirm a link between gum disease and atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the blood vessels that can lead to heart attack. The problem is that bleeding gums provide an entry into the blood for up to 700 different types of bacteria found in the mouth. Microbiologists at the University of Bristol have discovered that when bacteria get into the bloodstream, they stick to tiny fragments called platelets, causing them to clot. This can lead to partial blockages of blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease and heart attack. So it does not matter how fit, slim or healthy you are, your chances of getting heart disease are increased by having bad teeth. STROKE Brush your teeth well and floss regularly to protect your brain. Poor tooth brushing and bleeding, infected gums raises your risk of stroke in the same way as it does heart disease - by allowing bacteria into the bloodstream. A study published in the journal Stroke found that stroke ...
