Learn how to keep teeth and gums healthy in this dental care video. Expert: Shane Methal, DDS Video transcript: Hi, my name is Dr. Shane Methal, here at Greene Street Dental in SoHo, New York. I've been in private practice both in Maryland and consequently back in New York for the last 17 years. My office website is www.greenestreetdental.com, that's green with an "e" at the end, and today I'm going to be talking about teeth and dentistry. Healthy teeth: How to keep teeth and gums healthy First it's important to do the obvious, and that is brush and floss effectively. Ideally you should brush at least two times a day and floss those hard to reach in-between-the-teeth areas at least one time a day. You can use either a manual or an electric toothbrush, depending on what's right for you. One of the biggest components to dental problems is diet. You want to avoid sugary sweets, snacks, coffee, soda, anything that contains what we call fermentable carbohydrates. These are the sugars that bacteria in your mouth eat, produce acid and as a result produce cavities. This is why we brush and floss to remove this plaque. In regards to your gums, it's also important to brush correctly. Make sure you see your dentist at least two times a year, sometimes three and sometimes four to maintain excellent oral hygiene.
