It provides a complete platform for web applications, including dynamic graphics, network access, and development tools, and requires nothing more than available web browsers. We call the system lively for three reasons: It comes live off a web page. There is no installation. The entire system is written in JavaScript, and it becomes active as soon as the page is loaded by a browser. It can change itself and create new content. The Lively Kernel includes a basic graphics editor that allows it to alter and create new graphical content, and also a simple IDE that allows it to alter and create new applications. It comes with a basic library of graphical and computational components, and these, as well as the kernel, can be altered and extended on the fly. It can save new artifacts, even clone itself, onto new web pages. The kernel includes WebDav support for browsing and extending remote file systems, and thus has the ability to save its objects and &quot;worlds&quot; (applications) as new active web pages. The Lively Kernel uses only existing web standards. The implementation and user language is JavaScript, known by millions and supported in every browser. Ashmead's Kernel has a rich aromatic flavour, a true connoisseur's delicacy. It crops well for us 3 or 4 years out of 5. First raised by a Dr Ashmead in his garden in Gloucester in around 1700. It was apparently only well known in West Gloucestershire until the 1800s, an interesting point to consider-how many really good apples fail to gain the widespread acceptance which their merits deserved? It does suffer from cracking and bitter pit, you can't do much about this, just discard affected apples. A trace element feed such as seaweed can help correct deficiencies and minimise bitter pit. On the plus side, Ashmead is resistant to apple scab. Varieties which have maintained popularity over 300 plus years tend to have a reasonable level of natural disease resistance, modern varieties have always had pesticide sprays available so gardener selection hasn;t operated so much. Older is often better for flavour and 'growability'. Really excellent flavour, great also in juice or cider. A strong contender for inclusion in a five tree orchard. Although it's true that kernel-mode exploitation often presents some new challenges for exploit developers, it still all boils down to "creative debugging" and knowledge about the target in question. This talk intends to demystify kernel-mode exploitation by demonstrating the analysis and reliable exploitation of several real-life kernel vulnerabilities. From a defender's point of view this could hopefully serve as an eye-opener, as it demonstrates the ineffectiveness of HIDS, NX, ASLR and other protective measures when the kernel itself is being exploited. The entire process will be discussed, including how the vulnerabilities were found, how they were analyzed to determine if and how they can be reliably exploited and of course the exploits will be demonstrated in practice. None of the vulnerabilities that will be used as examples had public exploits by the time they were exploited by us, and includes the (in)famous Windows 2000/XP GDI bug, the FreeBSD 802.11 bug and a local NetBSD vulnerability. The RatSim team managed to build a perfect PC configuration to run MacOS X Leopard. We are using Vanilla Kernel + EFI, so, software updates without a problem! Everything is working, from CPU to GPU, with minor patches applied (Built-in sound) As for extras, we bought a cheap VIA firewire card, working perfectly with a DV camera (Canon ZR60) and Firewire Audio Interface attached (Presonus Inspire), also, we're using a Edimax USB Wireless dongle (EW-7318USG), working perfectly with kismac (wardriving app) The best thing is this machine was built for just 700 Brazilian Reais or US$ 400,00 (which could be much less expensive for people living in more developed countries without abusive taxes) By the way, note that you're not allowed to have Mac OS X installed on a PC, also, we're MacManiacs since 1984 or so, and we condone piracy, especially piracy of awesome software from Apple, but what we do condone more is the abusive prices here in Brazil for Macs and the total disrespect from Apple towards Brazilian Market, for instance, we hate the fact that something that belongs to us, such as an iPhone, is totally locked up for mediocre business agreements. In particular, the Linux kernel has recently suffered a bout of severe and high-profile vulnerabilities and drawn ire from the security community for it's mishandling of bugs with known security impact, resulting in a Pwnie award for "Lamest Vendor Response". Given the importance the Linux operating system plays in many enterprise environments, it is necessary to understand the strengths and weaknesses of its kernel's security. In this presentation, we'll explore these strengths and weaknesses by diving deep into the exploitation of vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel. Using real-world vulnerabilities and exploits, we'll detail the traditional classes of kernel vulnerabilities such as control flow hijacking (via stack smashing and SLAB/SLUB/SLOB allocator corruption), invalid userland memory accesses (including NULL pointer dereferences), and information leakage.
