Rothco Kevlar Tactical Gloves Review
I have worn these gloves for about 4 hours now, and am VERY impressed with them. I bought them for airsoft, tactical training, driving, and use as a security guard. Shipping was excellent with USPS, I bought them from Go Commando Gear through Amazon. They arrived the day before the earliest ETA. The first thing I noticed when I opened them up was the buttery feel to the goatskin leather fingers and palms. The second was that when I put them on, they felt a wee bit tight for comfort, I had anticipated this as I run a tad large for the "Large" size, but they still pleased me when they "broke in" after only a couple hours use. The inside is a bit rough feeling at first, with the leather ends from the stitching turned in, but they will wear down in a short time, so that is no problem, they still feel like a high-end custom glove to me There was a loose stitching thread on one glove, but I snipped it, and have kept an eye on the area where it was, and I am also pleased to say that it has not opened up at all, still just as tight as the rest of the glove. On to my favorite part, the Kevlar. Upon putting them on and inspecting them the first thing I did was test the "cut resistant" feature of the gloves. Pulling my Kershaw Leek that i keep honed to a razor edge(I can and do shave my face with it, when I am in a hurry) and digging the tip into the back of my hand, drew it across the glove slowly and methodically. When it comes to bulletproof material, I think of strong, dense objects like concrete and really thick glass. I've never thought of liquids. But British scientists have, and they say liquid armor is better than ordinary Kevlar. They're calling it "bulletproof custard" because once struck, its molecules lock together to create a denser surface. According to the scientists who've developed it, the liquid armor works by absorbing the force of the bullet strike and responding to it by becoming much thicker and more sticky. But the idea behind liquid armor isn't to replace Kevlar but rather to complement it to create a sort of super armor that's lighter, more flexible, and of course, stronger. In tests, a 10-layer Kevlar and liquid armor vest outperformed a 31-layer ordinary Kevlar vest. Cutting out layers of Kevlar without losing any of that bullet stopping effectiveness is a win for everyone. Researchers at BAE systems in Bristol combined a "shear-thickening" liquid with the existing material used in bullet- proof vests - called Kevlar - to create the new armour. The chemical formula of the new liquid is being kept secret but scientists say it works by thickening and becoming sticky on impact with a bullet. Is Kevlar Bullet Proof?
Great day at the range, and had some spare kevlar to experiment with. It stopped FMJ 9mm, but it would hurt something fierce. Then we tried 5.56mm, just to see... I don't know if it even slowed down. If it did, it probably just expand a little more. Which wouldn't be good. Just in case you didn't read the instructions (or are curious about Kevlar), our plates are the only protection against high-velocity rounds.
