Very Fast King Cobra on Attack
This is the fastest 2 meter+ king cobra I've ever seen. Lightning fast and it doesn't play by the rules. What I mean is, I've never seen a king cobra attack someone by shooting up a branch and almost launching itself through the air. It happened so fast - that we were unprepared for it - but, had given the snake enough room in case it did something totally out of character. This is an excellent video for those that keep snakes of all sorts - venomous snakes. You never really know the snake, until you get to know the snake. All snakes are different, they can move in different ways and attack differently than any you've seen before. This small king cobra was caught from a coconut palm plantation the night before - so it had been in captivity less than 24 hours. It had just eaten, that night - two 2-meter Red Tailed Rat Snakes that used to be in the same cage. I would think it would be lethargic and slow. NOPE. It was like a king cobra on speed. Be careful if you own venomous snakes - they can surprise you, as this one did us.

I get in the cage with the 5 meter long king cobra for a minute. This is the most active I've seen the king cobras, the day was cooler and they were in eating mode. One had a 3 meter rat snake almost entirely eaten. The cobra I was filming tried to get a good bite on the 3m python that is riding his back - but the python wasn't a pushover. The handler said the kings are tentative about eating the reticulated pythons because they're strong biters and fighters. I think I called the python a Burmese python in this video - not true, it's reticulated. Another king cobra video coming in a minute - he comes toward the gate when he realizes it's open behind me. Zambian opposition leader Michael Sata, was sworn in as president after an upset poll victory that ushered in a smooth handover of power in Africa's biggest copper producer. Sata, 74, on Friday swept to victory on the back of voters looking for change in a country that has seen its economy grow but who felt the riches from its mines had not made their way to the people or created enough jobs. The snake was spotted by Sainath Naik, a resident of the village, when he was fetching water from a overhead tank constructed on top of a hillock in the village. He immediately rushed back to the village and informed others, who in turn called officers of the forest department. Forest department staff rushed to the spot with Marshall Menezes, a snake catcher. Seeing the crowd, the snake hid itself in a bush and refused to come out, forcing the team to cut the bushes. After a two-and-a-half hour long struggle, Menezes finally managed to catch the snake with the help of the forest department staff. Menezes recalled that he had last caught a 15-foot long king cobra in 1992-93 and added that he had not spotted such a big snake in the region since then.

This is a nice video of a flight demonstration of the Palm Springs Air Museum's Bell P-63A Kingcobra. Not the greatest aircraft of WWII, but a significant one nonetheless, especially to the Soviets. This is one of the most wicked looking fighters of all time, in my honest opinion. This thing also really scoots off the runway despite the reduced, low-octane-fuel power settings that need to be used these days! This is typical, everyday (well, not quite) SoCal, USA warbird activity, ha! We are very, very lucky out here, and I certainly appreciate it! The Allison engine really never achieved a high state of development during WWII like the Rolls Royce Merlin. There were major problems, even several years into the post-war era. The Allison soldiered on into the early 1950s in the F-82 Twin Mustang and actually became a real solid powerplant by then, but by that time, who really cared anyway? King Cobra Snake Eating Red Tailed Racer Snake - Closeups
I got lucky to get here just as this big king cobra snake was eating this also big red-tailed racer (rat snake). I was less than 1 foot away from the king cobra here. When snakes are eating there isn't a lot that can bother them. Well, not a lot they can do. Especially when a snake eats a snake and has 2 meters of snake to get down his throat. He still had another meter of this red-tailed racer snake to go and the racer snake's tail was wrapped around a rock. So, it was slow going. The red-tailed racer he is eating was one of my favorite snakes here - a BEAUTIFUL snake. They puff up vertically when agitated - opposite of cobras. They are really cool snakes. Anyway. I just lucked into this king cobra chowing down and doing so very close to the fence. I'll post a photo or two at the king cobra page at ThailandSnakes.com because the photos were ultra clear. Me Tailing King Cobra with Thailand Snake Experts
Hanging out with 5 guys whose combined knowledge of King Cobras must be legend. I didn't include myself in that group! It was a competition between the Brits and the Thais. The Thais knew these snakes and were absolutely amazing with their comfort interacting with this 4m King Cobra. Eventually everyone noticed me sitting on the sidelines having way too much fun shooting video and I got dragged into it. First task? Tail the 4m King Cobra. This I did, sort of, and that was quite enough for me. If I didn't have a family I'd have definitely touched it on the head, as that seemed safe enough when surrounded by experts telling exactly what to do. Thai Children Teasing the King Cobra
These kids see this everyday, and apparently part of their ritual is that they check out the bags brought 'home' by dad, the resident snake show owner. Here we have a giant 5+ meter king cobra in one bag - the full bag, and he's not moving much. In the other bag is a smaller King - about 3-4 meters and it has some room to get agitated. The kids are dangerously close - and I'm NOT comfortable with it - but apparently they do it all the time when I'm not there.
