Welcome to the RLU-1 Breezy Experimental Aircraft! dgcpinoy.blogspot.com The flight plan had us depart Kalaeloa Airport in Barbers Point, perform a "touch and go" on the same runway before departing to the northeast towards Kalihi Valley. From there we buzzed the Kalihi saddle and popped out on the windward side where we turned around and performed another fly by of the Kalihi saddle once again before turning towards the Nu'uanu saddle and buzzing that. We continued on the windward side of the Ko'olau cliffs, doing a fly by of Piliwale and Bear Claw Ridges. Olomana was next, coming within hundreds of feet of Ahiki before heading in the direction of the Haiku Stairs, buzzing Nu'uanu and Kalihi saddle once more. While flying over the Stairway to Heaven, we noticed someone climbing up the stairs. My pilot honked (the plane was equipped with a horn) but the climber did not respond. We then flew over the Moanalua Saddle back to central O`ahu where we flew over the Kunia pineapple fields before heading back to Kalaeloa Airport to conclude our epic flight! Mahalo nui loa to Brian (my pilot and owner of the plane) for giving me an opportunity to see the Ko'olaus in which I've hiked numerous times from many parts of the mountain range, from a perspective never viewed before personally! Warsaw Multicultural Street Party, 28th of August 2011. Sharing Hawaiian culture with people in Poland. Our hula team performed a sacred hula pahu dance "A ko'olau'au". Choreography by kumu hula Raylene Ha'alelea Kawaiae'a that is a native Hawaiian and origins from Big Island Hawai'i. This sacred dance is usually performed in a heiau, which in Hawaiian means temple. It had been performed for the very first time by Hi'iaka, the youngest and beloved sister of Pele - Hawaiian Volcano Goddess. She was traveling from the Island of O'ahu to the Island of Kaua'i with her mission to bring Pele's lover - Lohi'au. The journey was very dangerous and full of traps. Ko'olau is the name of the winward side of the Island of O'ahu that characterizes with steep, bushy clifs and torrential rains brought by north-east winds. The symbolic meaning of the dance: Don't give up. There are no obstacles that you couldn't conquer. Kumu hula Raylene Ha'alelea Kawaiae'a visited Poland some years ago and shared with us beautiful hula culture. We are very grateful we had the opportunity to be her students. Mahalo kumu - you are always present in our hearts.

What we have is a new Meade LS-8 "Lightswitch Technology" telescope at my viewing spot in Kaneohe, Hawaii... This was my Christmas present for 2010... The Koolau Mountains provide some interesting daytime terrestrial viewing... Sometimes you can see hikers treking up the "Thousand Steps to Heaven" which go to the top of this peak... In the winter evening, point the telescope above & to the right of the mountain peak to view Jupiter, the Moon and to the left Orion... In the winter morning, point the telescope above & to the left of the mountain peak to view Saturn and Venus... Dew heaters are required for morning viewing due to the lower temperature & humidity near the ocean, so far, evening viewing has not required dew heaters... Dillingham Airfield is the only dark sky left on the island of Oahu, hope to someday view there at a star party... Koi pond in Kaneohe, that has fresh running water. It's a stream, that is fed by the Koolau Mountains, not far away. The water, is clear and very clean! The Koolau Mountain, is a mountain range that separates the leeward side of Oahu from the windward side. It rises to the highest point of 3100 feet. Because of its height, it catches the moisture from the tradewinds, which create clouds, then when conditions are right, it releases rain to the tropical forest below.
