ESA's next space-bound astronaut, André Kuipers, has spent most of the summer intensively training for his upcoming mission to the International Space Station with his crewmates Oleg Kononenko and Don Pettit. In the ISS the Dutch Astronaut will take part in ESA's fourth long duration mission. His training takes place in all the ISS partners facilities: at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, USA and of course in the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre (GCTC) in Star City, not far from Moscow in Russia. This story notably shows the training with the Soyuz simulators.

Included in André Kuipers' playlist on the International Space Station is a song called Oggi Ho Imparato A Volare, by Italian singer/songwriter Eugenio Finardi (the title translates as "Today, i would like to fly"). This is André's 'song of the day' on his blog for 25 April which, coincidentally, is a public holiday, Liberation Day, in Italy. Eugenio is one of Italy's most successful and influential rock singers and musicians, and his albums from the 1970s are considered classics of Italian rock. Eugenio is fascinated by astronomy and spaceflight, and said: "I have a real passion for astrophysics and space travel, not believing in UFOs and such but in the true spirit of scientific discovery. I have also written a few songs about space exploration, one inspired by Voyager's images called 'Oltre Gli Anelli di Saturno' (recorded also in English as 'Beyond the Icy Rings of Saturn') and another one called 'Le Stelle Stanno Ad Aspettare' (The Stars are Waiting)." One of his well-known songs is 'Extraterrestre', about wanting to travel in space. Eugenio was thrilled that his music is on the International Space Station, and he has been following André Kuipers' PromISSe mission closely. He was particularly supportive of the 'Earth Hour' initiative, when people all over the world turned off non-essential lights to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. Earth Hour was supported by André, who is an ambassador for the World Wide Fund for Nature, and ESA.

One of the songs that André Kuipers has taken with him on both of his space missions is 'Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)', by German singer/songwriter Peter Schilling. From Peter's album 'Error in the System', the song was originally recorded in German, and released in West Germany in 1983. It took European charts by storm, reaching Number 1 in West Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and Number 2 in France and the Netherlands. The English version, called 'Major Tom (Coming Home)' was first released in the USA in 1983, and also charted in UK, Canada and South Africa. Peter is from Stuttgart, Germany, has been making music for over 30 years. His songs often feature science-fiction themes (aliens, astronauts, spaceflight, etc.) and the character in his international hit is unofficially related to 'Major Tom', the theme of David Bowie's 1969 album Space Oddity. A live version of the song Major Tom appears on Peter's lastest album, Neu und Live 2010. Join Christian Hollingham for a complete replay of the successful launch of ESA astronaut, Andre Kuipers, on 21 December 2011. Kuipers was launched into orbit along with NASA astronaut Don Pettit and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko atop a Soyuz launcher, which lifted off at 2.16pm CET. As part of the PromISSe mission, Kuipers will be flight engineer for the duration. During the launch there are several views of the crew inside the TMA-03M spacecraft, along with extensive coverage of ground control in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. In the days between launch and docking their spacecraft will circle the globe 35 times, performing three major engine burns as its orbit is adjusted for docking with the International Space Station. Kuipers and his fellow crew members will dock with the ISS on 23 December 2011, and will be met by three crew members already in orbit. Andre, Don and Oleg will be aboard ISS for almost six months as part of expeditions 30 and 31.

'Back at the ISS' is a rocking musical greeting to ESA Astronaut André Kuipers, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and the entire crew of the ISS on the occasion of the docking of ESA's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), Edoardo Amaldi, set for 28 March 2012. The Kuiper Belt is an area or space surrounding the outer portion of our solar system. For the last decade mainstream scientists in NASA and other places have discovered thousands of planet sized objects that are not following the normal physical laws of the solar system. Het Kabinet opent de aanval op criminele motorbendes. Dat schrijft minister Opstelten van Veiligheid vandaag aan de kamer. Belastingdienst, politie, burgemeesters en het Openbaar Ministerie gaan nauw samenwerken om de criminaliteit en overlast van de bendes aan te pakken. Het Kabinet spreekt over zogenaamde outlawbikers, die zich schuldig maken aan criminaliteit, drugshandel, afpersings- en intimidatiepraktijken, wapenhandel, bedreigingen en geweld. Minister Opstelten noemt verder geen namen, zoals Hells Angels en Satudarah. Zo moet het voor criminele motorclubs veel moeilijker worden om bijeenkomsten te organiseren en om ergens een clubhuis te bouwen. VVD-Tweede Kamerlid Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert is een voorstander van de plannen van minister Opstelten en is blij dat er eindelijk een verenigd front wordt gevormd tegen de criminele motorbendes. Voorzitter van motorclub Satudarah Henk Kuipers vindt echter dat motorclubs ten onrechte gecriminaliseerd worden.

Onze astronaut André Kuipers die volgende week wordt gelanceerd voor de trip naar het internationale ruimtestation ISS, zit momenteel in quarantaine. Dat zegt Piet Smolders, ruimtevaartdeskundige van De Telegraaf in een extra Videoflits. Smolders doet verder voor hoe de astronauten straks uit een tube moeten eten en hoe ze perziksap uit water en poeder maken. Verder vertelt de voormalig directeur van Artis Planetarium over de voorbereidingen en zijn beelden vanuit de ruimte van de aarde te zien. Zaterdag 17 december staat een reportage van Piet Smolders over de lancering in De Telegraaf.

ESA astronaut André Kuipers' stay on the International Space Station (ISS) started on 23 December 2011 and continues until 1 July 2012. Apart from his demanding tasks as Flight Engineer for Expeditions 30/31, André is providing us with amazing imagery of Earth and of life and work on the ISS. For the first time, digital 3D still photos have been taken of cosmonauts carrying out extravehicular activities in their spacesuits. This short clip collects a selection of 3D images footage taken with the Erasmus Recording Binocular (ERB-2) and some 3D stills from a Fuji W3 camera. Stereoscopic images are a unique tool for providing viewers with a sense of presence in the constrained and dense habitat in which the astronauts live. Stereoscopic 3D glasses are required to properly enjoy the full 3D effect of this footage.
