Twenty four soldiers were killed in an alleged guerilla attack by Kurds in southeastern Turkey on Wednesday according to security sources. Militants of the Kurdistan Worker's Party, which is considered radical by Turkey as well as the US and European Union, fired live rounds on a number of military outposts in two districts of the Hakkari province which borders Iraq. The incident caused the largest death toll of Turkish security personnel in years. At least 18 soldiers were also injured in the attack. Kurdish separatists have increased their attacks southeast of the country since July and have killed over 50 Turkish security forces. Wednesday's attacks coincide with a roadside bomb attack allegedly also the work of Kurdish rebels which claimed the lives of five policemen and three civilians in the neighboring Bitlis area. The attack comes close on the heels of a visit by Turkish President Abdullah Gul to troops in the region to encourage optimism given the volatility of the area recently. In Turkey, violent clashes between ethnic Kurdish protesters and police erupted on Monday over the killing of at least 12 members of the Kurdistan Worker's party (PKK) by the country's security forces. The clashes in the eastern Turkish city of Dogubayazit came after the PKK rebels were killed while trying to cross into northern Iraq. Thousands of other pro-PKK protesters also turned out in the southern city of Diyarbakir. Stefanie Dekker reports.

The Kurds have been the main endangered people during the Gulf War in 1991. Between Iraq and Turkey, a hunt began to erase any trace of this population from their housings using deportations, chemical weapons and tortures. Living mainly in the South East of Turkey and North of Iraq, Kurds became the first targets of their residence countries. With a population of 4 million in North Iraq, Kurds have always claimed their wish for an autonomous country. In order to restrain separatist assumptions, Saddam Hussein led a campaign to remove Kurdish populations at any costs which conducted to more than 70 bombed villages and thousands of people dead. The silence and the non-intervention of the international community drove survivors to run away to Turkey where the same sort of atrocities was directed against them. These oppressions took them to create an independent army force called PKK in charge of defending their claimed lands spread over Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria: Kurdistan. They have been attacking separatist militants in southeastern Turkey and in northern Iraq, following an attack by the PKK in which 24 soldiers were killed. The rebels have not confirmed the deaths.
