National laureate urges intellectuals to take a stand

Preparing to be arrested as the dragnet for Bersih 2.0 supporters widens, national laureate A Samad Said urged intellectuals to stop being 'carma' but dare to make a stand against cruelty and injustice. He coined the word 'carma' which is the acronym of 'cari makan' (seeking to profit), during political satirist and cartoonist Zunar's book launch last night at Kuala Lumpur. "Writers seldom take a stand. Most of them are 'carma' and are always prepared to not take a stand. This has caused all the evil to grow and spread tremendously." The septuagenarian then directed his criticism against editors of mainstream media which has been demonising the July 9 rally called by Bersih 2.0 in favour of free and fair elections. 2011 Chemistry Noble Laureate Israeli Daniel Shechtman Talks 6/10/11 Eng. דניאל שכטמן

Israeli Scientist Wins Nobel Prize for Chemistry An Israeli scientist won this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering a material in which atoms were packed together in a well-defined pattern that never repeats. Recent Nobel prizes have generally split credit for scientific advances among two or three people, but this year's chemistry prize and accompanying 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.4 million) went to a single scientist: Daniel Shechtman, 70, a professor of materials science at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Dr. Shechtman is also a professor at Iowa State University and a researcher at the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory. The citation from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences states simply, "for the discovery of quasicrystals." Such regular but nonrepeating patterns, defined by precise rules, have been known in mathematics since antiquity, and medieval Islamic artists made decorative, nonrepeating tile mosaics, but it was thought impossible in the packing of atoms. Yet Dr. Shechtman discovered the same type of structure in a mix of aluminum and manganese. During a sabbatical in the United States at the National Bureau of Standards, now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, he took a molten glob of the metals and chilled it rapidly. The expectation was that the atoms would have been a random jumble, like glass. Yet when he examined his metal with an electron microscope, Dr. Shechtman found that the atoms were not random ...

Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail Inaugurates Zewail Foundation Public Lecture Series at AUC

The American University in Cairo (AUC) hosted the inaugural lecture of the Zewail Foundation Public Lecture Series in Science and Culture, delivered by Nobel laureate and AUC trustee Ahmed Zewail. Zewail's lecture, titled "Egypt is the Hope," discussed Egypt's future in the post-revolutionary period and announced the inauguration of a new project, Zewail City for Science and Technology. Addressing a packed Ewart Hall, Zewail said, "The January 25 revolution was a model revolution as it represented the unity of a whole nation with all segments of the society." He added that he never imagined how much corruption existed in Egypt until the revolution brought it to light. He continued his remarks, discussing opportunities for economic development in Egypt including the expansion of the country's agriculture and tourism industries, and a focused effort to improve education. "There will never be a revival without focusing on education," he noted. "Thanks to the revolution and a government that cares about education and scientific research, we were able to establish the Zewail City for Science and Technology," said Zewail. "The city will include an international university and a technology garden."

Exclusive: Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkul Karman on the Struggle for Democracy in Yemen

www.DemocracyNow.org - In a Democracy Now! exclusive interview, we speak to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Yemeni activist, Tawakkul Karman. The UN Security Council is set to vote on a resolution calling on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to immediately step down after 33 years in power. All five permanent members of the Security Council back the measure, which "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators. The popular uprising Yemen continues despite more attacks by government forces, including dozens of demonstrators murdered by snipers in recent days. Karman has been in New York City all week to press for international pressure on the Saleh regime. She is the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. A 32-year-old mother of three, an outspoken journalist and Yemeni activist, Karman has agitated for press freedoms and staged weekly sit-ins to demand the release of political prisoners from jail. She founded Women Journalists Without Chains and has played a leading part in the struggle for women's rights and for democracy in Yemen. Most recently, she has led rallies in the continuing protests against the rule of Saleh. "We have the dream, and we have the ability...we will not stop here, we will build our country," Karman said. "We tell Saudi that they should stand with the Yemeni people. And anyone who doesn't stand with our people, they are the losers. We know what it means to be free, and we will achieve it." Of today's vote at the United ...

Ernie Kovacs as Percy Dovetonsils, Poet Laureate, reciting "Leslie the Mean Animal Trainer"

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Here is one of Ernie's most famous, and bizarre, characters. Percy Dovetonsils was a take off on a particular genre of television show found in the early fifties (at least in the New York City area). Usually airing during the early to mid afternoons, this type of show was intended to appeal to the harried little housewife during her break between finishing the laundry and starting dinner (the SNL sketch "The Continental", with the great comedic performance by Christopher Walken, was in fact based on such a show by the same name). So Percy would wax poetry...very bad poetry...in an effort to entertain housewives. Tell me that I might be wrong, but I somehow feel his personal attraction was directed more to their working husbands! BTW, Percy indicates that he is offering "a cluuuue". This sequence apparently had been created as one of the "clue" seqments of his game show "Take a Good Look".

Rare videos of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore 1861-1941

Rabindranath Tagore (Bengali: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর) (7 May 1861 -- 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he was the first non-European Nobel laureate. His poetry in translation was viewed as spiritual, and this together with his mesmerizing persona gave him a prophet-like aura in the West. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. A Pirali Brahmin from Kolkata, Tagore had been writing poetry since he was eight years old. At age 16, he published his first substantial poetry under the pseudonym Bhanushingho ("Sun Lion") and wrote his first short stories and dramas in 1877. Tagore achieved further note when he denounced the British Raj and supported Indian independence. His efforts endure in his vast canon and in the institution he founded, Visva-Bharati University. These rare videos have been collated from other YouTube contributors. The recital at the beginning is by an unknown narrator. The poem is from the 'Gitanjali'. the work for which Tagore won the Nobel prize in literature in 1913. I found the recital quite brilliant and took the liberty of using it to supplement the mute videos. The song of Tagore which follows is vocalised by Kavita Krishnamurti

Poet Laureate Infinity - Onimusha - Canibus - Omni3

"Poet Laureate Infinity". The track has 1000 bars, in the form of five 200 bar verses (which are all eleven minutes in length), and is layered in such a way that when you mix back and forth between each 200-bar verse, the other four verses are identical to the original verse in both sound and enunciation of the words for the entire length of the verse. And because each verse has similar words and a similar rhyme scheme, you can mix the track differently every time and it would still make sense; the combinations of rhymes that can be made from all five verses are infinite, hence the name of the song. more explanation here www.esnips.com
