Airline president Jaime Bautista said the workers in catering, airport services and call center units would be laid off by Sept. 30 but could be employed by the companies that the carrier had contracted to provide those services. LEVITTOWN -- The school board approved the layoff of 66 teachers and assistants Wednesday night. According to board president Michael Pappas, there was "no other alternative." Parents, teachers and students were among the more than 450 people who attended what Newsday called a contentious meeting with the teachers union and board officials going over failed contract negotiations. There will also be fewer elective classes for high school students. School officials cited the loss of millions in state aid and pressure to limit property tax increases as factors in the cuts. The reductions were part of the $197.9 million budget voters approved last month.
