The LCBO is an Ontario Crown Corporation, a monopoly established 84 years ago to sell liquor, wine and beer to the people of Ontario. LCBO stores are generally the only stores allowed to sell hard liquor in Ontario. Currently, the LCBO is one of the world's largest single purchasers of beverage alcohol products. The LCBO is by far the largest wine retailer in the province. Licensed bars and restaurants may resell alcoholic beverages, but they must be consumed on the establishment's premises. The bars and restaurants themselves must buy their products from the LCBO, The Beer Store, or directly from Ontario wineries and breweries. There is no retail competition permitted in alcoholic beverages in Ontario on the same scale as all other consumer products. The Ontario Libertarian Party would change this situation, selling off the LCBO and opening up the entire industry to competitive enterprise.

Cobourg has one LCBO. Currently, there are no electric door openers for its disabled customers, and haven't been since Cobourg had a liquor store (1920s). It's time for Cobourg to get with the times and respect and comply with provincial legislation for a provincial building - install electric door openers! It's not like it can't afford it. The LCBO's profit margins are 48.5%, and made profits in 2008 of $1.35 billion (that's 1.35 million door openers). Cost of an opener? less than $1000 installed. Cobourg's LCBO probably makes well above that in one day. A wise investment. I asked the acting manager for an interview, they declined the opportunity.
