Tablature: i182.photobucket.com This lesson demonstrates the kind of licks I play when Im in a shred mood. Most of them include tapping notes. Many guitarists add tapping notes in their legatos licks. This actually helps to extend arpeggios. [hints] Overall, in order to reach a smooth legato technique I focuse on 2 essential issues. -Playing each note at equal volume. -Playing each note in correct timing. I also practiced a lot legato on acoustic guitar in order to increase my fingers strength. Lick#1 It is quite a famous one. The A 7th arpeggio. There are so many ways to play it. Im inspired here a lot by Bruce Bouillet who have insane A7 shred licks. This lick demands a bit of stretching. I pick the minimal amount of notes. I try to hammer on and pull off as many notes as possible. It's difficult but important that the tapping notes sound at equal volume so that you get that smooth tone. Of course, feel free to add a slide on the tapping note on the E high string. I appologize not showing the slide/tapp note in slow motion. Focus first on mastering the 3 notes/string string skipping arpeggio and while practicing with metronome find a pattern that is natural for your fingers... Lick #2 It's an ascending lick. So here we focus on hammer-ons. It's coming from an A 7M arpeggio. I add the 13th (f#). It's very symetrical and repeat on two strings a groups of five notes. It's quite easy to memorize and pretty challenging to run smoothly. Try to turn over the notes on two <b>...</b>

SC-025 • Legato Patterns with Pentatonics (Guitar Lesson)
In this guitar lesson I show you how to use some legato patterns to speed up your pentatonic scales and get some cool licks. I go through one pattern in detail and then just show you another 5 that you can explore for yourself. I got taught these patterns by my teacher many years ago, but a few guys have sent me links that the main pattern here is also taught by Paul Gilbert in his video called Intense Rock II. He plays it way better than me too. I'm pretty sure you can't copyright licks anyway, but I feel I should credit Paul Gilbert here because he was almost certainly the origin of these licks (via my teacher). So if you want some more even more intense licks then look up his video - it's pretty amazing. So I emailed Paul to check he wasn't going to be pissed about my use of the lick. His reply: "I haven't copyrighted any pentatonic licks, but I do own F# on the 11th fret of the G string exclusively. Rock and Roll, Paul" What a dude. In this installment of our "Lick Of The Week" series at www.GuitarLessons365.com we will take a look at a legato lick in the style of the great Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple. You can get it here www.guitarlessons365.com This Ritchie Blackmore style legato lick uses slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs across multiple strings to create a slippery sounding lick that can be quite deceiving to the ear. Although it is in straight sixteenth note triplets, you will notice that the use of all of the various legato techniques help to mask that strict 16th note triplet feel. Take your time and slowly work this lick up to speed and make sure that all of the notes are articulated correctly. It might be a good idea to count out loud the timing of the lick in the beginning while you play it like I do briefly in the video. So have fun with this cool Ritchie Blackmore style legato lick! Sadly most people do not consider these qualities when discussing a voice, instead focusing on range or power. Yet it is these two qualities that make a voice expressive and beautiful. The most powerful and versatile voice is nothing when lacking in legato and timbre, being totally displeasing to the ear. And yet limited voices become heart rendering when endowed with such gifts. Now, some may think me a fool for showcasing these two particular voices to make this point, being they are from such different genres. However, my years of studying great voices in the entire spectrum of music has led me to believe there are none better. I present legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, and revered folk and spiritual bass singer, Paul Robeson. Playing "legato" on the guitar means doing hammer-ons and pull-offs, and in this lesson we will mainly focus on the pull-off part. If you are new to the legato technique - you will find that even the first exercise presented in this video lesson can be quite a challenge. However, it is well worth the effort - because once you do nail the basics of the technique, all you need is time and practice - and you will be well on your way to extreme legato playing!
