Le Mans 24 Hours 2011 - Mike Rockenfeller Crash Audi R18 #1 (English)
Audis R18 # Hits a Ferrari and Crashes into the barrier wich almost seems to kill Mike, but luckely he survived. For the second time in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours, one of Audi's new R18 cars has been forced to retire after a massive accident involving a GTE class Ferrari. Approaching 11pm local time, Mike Rockenfeller had just moved into second place overall at the wheel of the #1 car when a GTE Ferrari -- believed to be the #71 driven by Robert Kaufmann -- moved across on the Audi on the high-speed kink leading to Indianapolis. The resulting contact saw Rockenfeller tipped into a spin that saw the Audi impact the barrier at high speed on the left-hand side of the circuit before the car rebounded across the circuit and smashed into the barrier on the right. Such was the extent of the damage that it wasn't immediately apparent which car had been involved before the reaction of the Audi crew told its own story. According to Audi Motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich, Rockenfeller was able to climb from the car and get over the barrier on the side of the circuit before medical crews arrived. Rockenfeller has now been taken away by ambulance from the scene of the accident. So far its said that he walked away from the car with no injuries! Mike Rockenfeller has a massive crash on the way to the Indianapolis corner. This time's it the #1 Audi of Mike Rockenfeller who made contact with Robert Kauffman. The worst accident in motor racing history happened at the 1955 running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. A collision between a Mercedes and an Austin-Healy sent the Mercedes' engine, hood and steering assembly in to the crowd. Nearly 80 spectators died instantly.

Allan McNish in the #3 Audi R18 TDI was involved in a horrific accident in the 2011 Le Mans 24 hour race. McNish made contact with the #58 Ferrari and crashed heavily into the barriers just after the Dunlop bridge. Thankfully he was able to walk away with no major injury.

Audi R18 - The Le Mans car for 2011
Audi is setting its sights on the next Le Mans victory with the new R18 TDI. The hardtop coupé was especially designed for the 24 hours at Le Mans. In 2011 rules call for much smaller engines than before. Audi decided upon a 3.7 liter V6 TDI engine to power the R18, continuing to place its faith in diesel power, with which it was successful for the first time back in 2006.

1999 - Le Mans - Peter Dumbreck's massive accident
At 8.40pm approx we had a simply huge accident when Peter Dumbreck in his Mercedes CLR (also driven by Christophe Bouchet and Nick Heidfield) flipped and took off. Everybody had worried about just this happening and sadly it did. The car flipped at least 30 feet in the air and then crashed high into the trees and as it rolled it landed on its wheels. The marshalls were stunned and not unnaturally took a moment to react. It was a big one . Immediately the Mercedes Team closed the #6 pit garage doors, this is a traditional way of withdrawing the #6 car. The accident happened midway between Mulsanne and Indianapolis, luckily this in an area where there were no spectators. Aerial shots show that the car came to rest about 10-15 metres away from the track having flown around a couple of hundred yards before crashing into the trees . It didn't look as if the car rolled. While all this was going on the #2 Toyota is back in its garage, everybody was expecting it, the engine cover is off and they are changing the discs. There are two safety cars out on the circuit out while they sort out this major incident several cars have seized the chance to go to the pits. At 21:09 hrs our information is that Peter Dumbreck is, amazingly, not seriously injured and will of course be shipped off to Hospital for a check up. He may have been saved serious injury since the car fell through the trees and landed on its wheels and possibly rolled several times. The general feeling amongst the media <b>...</b>
