Milton Friedman on Libertarianism (Part 1 of 4)

What are the elements of the libertarian movement and how does one of its most illustrious proponents, Milton Friedman, apply its tenets to issues facing the United States today? Milton Friedman, Senior Research Fellow, Hoover Inst., Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences discusses how he balances the libertarians' desire for a small, less intrusive government with environmental, public safety, food and drug administration, and other issues. This is a 4 part video. Here are the links to all 4 parts. What It Means to Be A Libertarian

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co What does it mean to be a libertarian? Dr. Jeffrey Miron at Harvard offers one answer. According to Miron, libertarians have enormous respect for individual decisions. While other ideologies attempt to use government force to advance their ideas of how people should act or behave, libertarians think that individuals should be able to live their own lives as they see fit. What Does It Mean to Be Libertarian?

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co According to Dr. Stephen Davies, libertarianism is first and foremost a political doctrine. Libertarians seek a society most conducive to human flourishing amongst autonomous self-defined individuals. Libertarians argue that this state of affairs is accomplished when the role of government and power is kept to a minimum. Although some have argued that libertarianism is a cult or rigid creed, Dr. Davies argues it is not, as there is a great deal of debate within the libertarian tradition. These internal debates are a sign of intellectual vitality, and are healthy for any intellectual tradition. Advance liberty: lrnlbty.co

Libertarian Vs. Tea Party

An average libertarian learns what an average Tea Partier believes. Obviously, this doesn't reflect everyone's views. But it is based on my own experience as a libertarian, having attended a Tea Party last year. By then, the Tea Party has shifted away from Ron Paul, and resembled ideology closer to Sarah Palin's or Pat Robertson's. Many libertarians have since distanced themselves from the Tea Party because of this, while others still have hope for it. One major motivation for me making this video, is because I'm tired of people painting libertarians and people like Glenn Beck with the same brush. Glenn Beck is NOT a libertarian. And the Tea Party is closer to neocon than it is libertarian. It's no wonder so many people are misinformed about libertarians. Thanks for watching. I know you have your own ideas, so feel free to use the comment section. *Update* People are telling me that not all Tea Parties are like this. I hope that's true. But the one I went to... there were posters of dead babies, a banner saying "we kicked god out, look at us now", signs calling Obama a Muslim and Kenyan, a speaker saying that chili day in September was proof that Global Warming is a lie, a speaker saying "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops", rhetoric against gays, atheists, and Muslims, ... and literally every speaker invoked their religion, like "Barrack HUSSEIN Obama is not our leader, god is!" Basically, the Tea Party was advertised as libertarian, but it was <b>...</b>

Exploring Liberty: An Introduction to Libertarian Thought (David Boaz)

In the first lecture in the "Exploring Liberty" series, David Boaz, the author of Libertarianism: A Primer, gives an introduction to the theory and politics of liberty. Libertarianism is the belief that each person has the right to live his life as he chooses so long as he respects the equal rights of others. Libertarians defend each person's right to life, liberty, and property. In the libertarian view, voluntary agreement is the gold standard of human relationships. If there is no good reason to forbid something (a good reason being that it violates the rights of others), it should be allowed. Force should be reserved for prohibiting or punishing those who themselves use force, such as murderers, robbers, rapists, kidnappers, and defrauders (who practice a kind of theft). Most people live their own lives by that code of ethics. Libertarians believe that that code should be applied consistently, even to the actions of governments, which should be restricted to protecting people from violations of their rights. Governments should not use their powers to censor speech, conscript the young, prohibit voluntary exchanges, steal or "redistribute" property, or interfere in the lives of individuals who are otherwise minding their own business. The Libertarian Argument

First: My apologies for slipping off the map. I was assigned to run a workshop at AACR at the last minute, and I'm uploading this from my hotel in Chicago (at AACR2012). It's been the busiest month of my life with the house going on the market, a new project and new position at work, and AACR on top of it all. For those of you who are curious about why I missed the Reason Rally, it's because my daughter's birthday was on the same day, and I'm a father first and foremost. Sorry to have missed it. I should be back at 100% very soon. Let's see who can be the first to misinterpret this video to be advocating for a totalitarian state with no personal liberty! Winner gets a free "Slippery Slope-n-Slide"* I'm not interested in criticizing the "Big L" party because they provide a small minority of people with a voice and they provide a useful counterpoint to the two-party system. This video is strictly about the misuse of "the government has no right to tell me to..." argument. "We, the people", have a right to act when one person's choices affect the rest of us. It's easy to miss the subtle externalities that come from living in a complex and interdependent society. Other topics where there is clearly a conflict between personal liberty and the best interests of the society: 1. Vaccine refusal 2. Extreme sports 3. Unlicensed medical practices 4. Religious tax exemptions 5. Recreational drug use *offer not valid on planet Earth

Jim DeMint: Why Republicans Must Become More Libertarian

"The new debate in the Republican party needs to be between conservatives and libertarians," says Sen. Jim DeMint (RS.C.). "A lot of the libertarian ideas that Ron Paul is talking about...should not be alien to any Republican." Yet right after the 2010 midterm elections, the influential Tea Party favorite proclaimed that "you can't be a fiscal conservative and not be a social conservative," a comment that was widely viewed as a slap at libertarians. And South Carolina's junior senator is also a staunch pro-lifer, has favored a constitutional ban on flag burning, and is on the record saying that gays shouldn't be allowed to teach at public schools. More recently, DeMint has been leaning libertarian. His new book, Now or Never: Saving America from Economic Collapse, is a warning to the nation that we need radical spending cuts (including putting defense spending on the table) or else face economic oblivion. And he was instrumental in getting Tea Party Republicans elected in 2010, including the most libertarian member of the caucus, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who also wrote the foreword to DeMint's book.Reason's Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch sat down with DeMint for a wide-ranging discussion about fiscal vs. social conservatism, cutting spending, the GOP presidential nomination, whether the Tea Party still matters, and much more. One of the things that enhances freedoms are roads. Infrastructure enhances freedom. A social safety net enhances freedom. What should we do with the losers that are picked by the free market? Do we live in a society or don't we? Are we a collective? Everybody's success is predicated on the hard work of all of us; nobody gets there on their own. Why should it be that the people who lose are hung out to dry? For a group that doesn't believe in evolution, it's awfully Darwinian. In a representative democracy, we are the government. We have work to do, and we have a business to run, and we have children to raise.. We elect you as our representatives to look after our interests within a democratic system. Is government inherently evil? Sometimes to protect the greater liberty you have to do things like form an army, or gather a group together to build a wall or levy. As soon as you've built an army, you've now said government isn't always inherently evil because we need it to help us sometimes, so now.. it's that old joke: Would you sleep with me for a million dollars? Why Should Liberals Like Libertarian Ideas?

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Are you a liberal? If so, Dr. Stephen Davies provides a few compelling reasons to consider libertarianism. For instance, both liberals and libertarians want to eliminate poverty and offer more opportunities to the population at large. Liberals and libertarians also emphasize the importance of freedom and human well-being. From a libertarian perspective, government is not the answer to these problems. In fact, libertarians view concentrated political power as the single largest threat to individual liberty. Can a White Libertarian Man Represent NY's Chinatown? Meet Dan O'Connor.

Meet Dan O'Connor, a self-described libertarian Democrat who wants to represent New York's District 12 - which includes Chinatown and parts of Queens and Brooklyn - in Congress. O'Connor spent six years living in China, so he feels a connection to the inhabitants of Manhattan's Chinatown, who he says share his views that taxes and regulations on businessess are too high, immigration laws too onerous, and school-choice programs too small. Those positions play well in the rest of the district across the East River too, he says. So does his belief that defense spending should be cut and troops brought home, that the Federal Reserve should be audited, and that politicians should be term-limited. Indeed, should O'Connor manage to unseat the Democractic incumbent, Nydia Velazquez, in September's primary, he's pledged to serve no more than four terms. O'Connor faces an uphill struggle, for sure. Reason's Matt Welch spoke with him at last summer's FreedomFest in Las Vegas, and his ideas are striking for their uniqueness among office seekers calling themselves Democrats. If a 70 second video is simply not enough info I recommend Marilee Haylock's What is Libertarianism? and of course libertarian.ca Canadians need a new political voice. Canadians need to reverse the unprecedented growth of the size and scope of our government. Canadians need The Libertarian Party of Canada. What is a Libertarian? A Libertarian believes we should be free to control our own lives That Canada needs to shift the power away from our centrally planned society And return that power back to the individual Libertarians believe we need to empower citizens In the defence of their rights In the defence of their lives In the defence of their property Not restrict them with red tape or legislate them away Libertarians feel government should act only as our servant and never as our master "The very concept of the individual is becoming obsolete." Noam Chomsky Attacks American "Libertarians"

Everyone's favorite subversive intellectual cuts through the right-wing rhetoric. Language can be a minefield of evolving, ambiguous, and confusing definitions. This is why we have the study of semantics. Here are some of my favorite words, terms, and phrases that many of us on the Web are now dealing with: freedom, equality, liberty, liberalism, libertarianism, conservatism, socialism, communism, marxism, anarchism, individualism, mutualism, fascism, classical liberalism, neo-classical liberalism, neoliberalism, neoconservatism, (lots of "isms"), free will, determinism, democracy, workers' rights, labor value, natural law, natural rights, natural freedom, natural aristocracy, meritocracy, capitalism, state capitalism, the state, government, free markets, free trade, laissez-faire, etc, etc. If you're reading this then you are a member of a tiny minority of Americans who're curious about things like political science, political philosophy, history, and economics. Most Americans couldn't care less, because thinking about these things is difficult. And these concepts aren't taught in our public schools because not only are they difficult but they could pose a threat to the status quo. Should the electorate in even a limited democracy such as ours be knowledgable on these subjects? I would say, yes. But most say, no.
