June 26 2011 Las Conchas Fire near Los Alamos

Time-lapse movie of the Las Conchas Fire, Los Alamos County, June 26 2011. Time-lapse exposures are from a vantage point just north of Santa Fe, home of Polly White & Michael Zeiler. Los Alamos city and labs can be seen to the right of the fire. I've been contacted by a fire scientist and learned that this video is a rare photographic record of a phenomena called "horizontal roll vortex" fire. This type of fire was first identified in 1956 and is not well understood. A "horizontal roll vertex" fire as seen in this video has a clear rotation of the fire column and is associated with extreme crown fires. This fire is certainly extreme, having grown to 43000 acres on its first day. A better understanding of the conditions which led to this fire will hopefully enhance forecasts and warnings of severe fire danger. I'm sending the photographs which comprise this time-lapse video to fire scientists for their analysis.

Video of wildfires raging close to nuke weapons lab in Los Alamos

Fire crews are continuing the fight to keep a wildfire from reaching America's premier nuclear-weapons laboratory and the surrounding community of Los Alamos. Firefighters spent Wednesday setting fires to create a burned out area west and south of the laboratory. The fire had grown to 201 square kilometres by nightfall. Officials say 13 homes have been lost so far and three others damaged. The pillars of smoke that can be seen as far as Albuquerque, 60 miles (97 kilometres) away, have people on edge. The fire has also cast a haze as far away as Kansas.

Evacuations at Los Alamos National Laboratory

A wildfire that roared out of nowhere on Sunday in northern New Mexico prompted an evacuation of Los Alamos County on Monday, and by midafternoon had spread to the boundary of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the highly sensitive headquarters for United States military nuclear research. A laboratory spokesman, Kevin Roark, said the blaze, at the facility's southern edge, was still several miles from any essential structures on the 25600-acre property. Mr. Roark said that nuclear and other hazardous materials had been placed in safe storage as a precaution. An emergency operations unit remained active at the laboratory in New Mexico, while authorities were watching closely for a change in wind direction for the Las Conchas fire, nearing Los Alamos from the southwest. "It's been a very long night for the fire crews," said Los Alamos National Laboratory Separately, US nuclear authorities were watching floodwaters threatening a nuclear power plant in Nebraska, after a protective barrier collapsed. The 2000-foot long barrier, holding back flood waters from the Missouri river, collapsed early Sunday, threatening the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant. "This allowed floodwaters to surround the auxiliary and containment buildings, which are protected by design to a floodwater level of 1014 mean sea level," said the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Activist group warns Los Alamos wildfire 3 1/2 miles from dumpsite with plutonium-contaminated waste

Date: 6/27/2011 A serious New Mexico wildfire 78 square miles in size has forced a mandatory evacuation of the town of Los Alamos, which is where Los Alamos National Laboratory is located.[1] This laboratory is one of the three sites where the secret Manhattan Project was conducted resulting in the development of the world's first atomic bomb, as well as the hydrogen bomb. At the time, the responsibility of Los Alamos National Laboratory was weapons research and design. According to the AP an activist group called Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety warned that the wildfire is 3.5 miles away from 30000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste stored on the grounds of the Los Alamos National Laboratory: ... The anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, however, said the fire appeared to be about 3 1/2 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico.[1] ... The media contact for Los Alamos National Lab when asked refused to confirm the statement by Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety: ... Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval declined to confirm that there were any such drums currently on the property. He acknowledged that low-level waste is at times put in drums and regularly taken from the lab to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project site in Carlsbad.[1 ...

Thousands flee Fire inches towards Los Alamos National labs

Thousands of residents have fled the town that hosts the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory ahead of a wildfire that has charred more than 20000 hectares (49000 acres) in northern New Mexico, local authorities said Tuesday. Los Alamos, a town of some 13000 inhabitants, is the site of the national laboratory where the United States' first atomic bombs were manufactured and tested. In a single day the flames, swept along by winds of up to 95 kph (60 mph) and fueled by the dry trees and bushes of the forests, crossed the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, and Tuesday morning authorities tried to determine if the wildfire had reached Pajarito Canyon.

Radioactive Waste Dumped In Open Pitts Outside Los Alamos National Lab - Fires Burn Close By

**Please read below for important information. georgewashington2.blogspot.com RADIOACTIVE WASTE DUMPED IN OPEN PITS OUTSIDE LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LAB To understand why a raging wildfire near the Los Alamos National Laboratory is a big deal, you must understand how wastes were disposed. Los Alamos Canyon runs past runs past the old Manhattan Project site in town and a 1940s era dump site where workers are near the end of a clean-up project of low-level radioactive waste. The World War II Manhattan Project developed the first atomic bomb, and workers from the era dumped hazardous and radioactive waste in trenches along six acres atop the mesa where the town sits. "The threat is pretty limited," said Kevin Smith, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration site manager for Los Alamos, which over sees the lab. "Most of the materials have been dug up." But a report produced by the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability found: Approximately 18 million cubic feet of radioactive and chemical solid wastes onsite were disposed of since 1943. "All of the radioactive waste and most of the chemical waste have been buried on the mesas of Pajarito Plateau where LANL is located. Radioactive liquid wastes were discharged to the canyons, initially with little treatment." For many years, one method of disposal was "kick-and-roll". The back of a truck was brought to the edge of a hole and barrels of waste were kicked. Wherever the barrels rolled tow as their final resting ...

Los Alamos fire moves north

Los Alamos officials plan for return of residents Firefighters have been holding their ground against what's now the biggest wildfire in New Mexico's history. The fire has blackened more than 162 square miles near the Los Alamos nuclear weapons lab. National Guard troops and law enforcement officers have been patrolling neighborhoods and enforcing evacuation orders, but officials say those orders could soon be lifted. Authorities haven't given a timetable, but they're preparing for the return of thousands of people to Los Alamos and the nuclear lab. County workers are already preparing for the eventual rush of utility service calls, as well as possible flooding from surrounding mountainsides denuded by the wildfire. The blaze was several miles upslope Friday from Los Alamos National Laboratory, boosting confidence that it no longer posed an immediate threat to the facility. Thousands of experiments have been put on hold because of the fire.

LOS ALAMOS, NM • With firefighters holding their ground against the largest wildfire ever in New Mexico, officials at the nation's premier nuclear weapons laboratory and in the surrounding city planned for the return of thousands of evacuated employees and residents. Los Alamos Fire Threat Put Safety of Nuclear Labs across US into Question The blaze was several miles upslope Friday from Los Alamos National Laboratory, boosting confidence that it no longer posed an immediate threat to the facility. Thousands of experiments, including those on two supercomputers and studies on extending the life of 1960s-era nuclear bombs, have been put on hold because of the fire. Authorities didn't give a timetable for when they would lift evacuation order that began Monday for the town of Los Alamos, home to 12000 people. But some county workers were already back to prepare for the eventual rush of utility service calls, as well as possible flooding from surrounding mountainsides denuded by the wildfire. I previously posted a video for Los Conchas fire on June 26 2011. One section of the video is particularly interesting because the fire behaves as a rotating vortex. This video highlights the section of interest at HD resolution so that you can see the rotation more clearly. It really appears as a fire tornado.

'Monsoon rain could flood Los Alamos with contaminants'

Willem Malten from the Los Alamos Study Group says that although the town of Los Alamos which is still one of the United States' most active nuclear weapons facilities has escaped the threat of a fierce wildfire, a new natural phenomenon is now threatening the local communities. Now monsoon rains threaten to flood whole communities with contaminants such as plutonium, uranium and mercury, he said in an interview with Press TV's US Desk on Wednesday. He said "there is a frantic community effort under way with mainly Native Americans sandbagging their own homelands while the [The Los Alamos National] Laboratory just removed 12000 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the canyons."COPYRIGHT STATEMENT: All audio content in this video is solely property of the original recording artist and the use of it is not intended to disobey any copyright law.
