Make Luminol - The Complete Guide

In this video we make luminol from domestically available chemicals. The process pretty complicated and dangerous at parts and so should only performed by, or under the direct supervision of, an experienced chemist. First we obtain diethylhexyl phthalate by refluxing 50g of finely cut vinyl gloves in enough isopropanol to completely cover them for at least one hour, preferably three to four. The alcohol solution of diethylhexyl phthalate is filtered and the supernatant is boiled until it reduces to half its volume. An equal amount of water along with 10g of sodium hydroxide is added and the mixture boiled for an hour. This causes the diethylhexyl phthalate to hydrolyze into phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. After the solution cools it will phase separate into an aqueous layer containing disodium phthalate and an organic layer containing the alcohols. Retaining just the aqueous layer, 25mL of 12 molar hydrochloric acid is added to precipitate the phthalic acid. Chilling may be necessary. The supernatant is discarded and the residue of wet phthalic acid is purified and converted into phthalic anhydride by heating it to 300 Celsius. First the water boils off and then the phthalic anhydride evaporates and condenses on the sides of the beaker. At this point a flask of cold water is placed over the beaker to allow the phthalic anhydride to deposit on it. Periodically the phthalic anhydride deposits are harvested until no more can be obtained. 45mL of sulfuric acid along with ...

Elementary Productions: Chemiluminescence of Luminol

Two solutions, A and B, are made. Solution A contains Luminol in an alkaline environment, whilst solution B contains Potassium Ferricyanide in a 0,03% Hydrogen Peroxide solution. When the two solutions are mixed, they reacts and emit blue light

Chemiluminescence: Luminol

Chemiluminescence of luminol. Two solutions are combined, the first solution contains luminol and sodium hydroxide. The second solution is 0.03% Hydrogen peroxide and potassium ferricyanide. The luminol and the hydrogen peroxide react to cause the chemiluminescence. The iron in potassium ferricyanide is a catalyst for the reaction. This is also used by crime scene investigators. A solution of hydrogen peroxide and luminol is placed into a spray bottle. When the solution comes into contact with blood, the iron present in hemoglobin will catalyze the reaction and it will begin to glow. www.monkeyvsgravity.com If you enjoy this type of video, subscribe! Synthesis and Chemiluminescence of Luminol

3-Nitrophthalhydrazide, prepared in a previous video, is reduced with a readily available reducing agent (thiourea dioxide, TUD) to luminol, which is obtained in 66% yield due to some minor complications with workup. A significantly higher yield would normally be expected based on a smaller batch run previously. The product is then used for two demonstrations of chemiluminescence: Potassium ferricyanide catalyzed light emission in water utilizing hydrogen peroxide and uncatalyzed light emission with NaOH in dimethyl sulfoxide using atmospheric oxygen. Note that the reaction mechanism is not given for the reduction. This is because I am led to believe that TUD functions by a single electron transfer mechanism, which is fairly confusing to draw out. The intro music clip is from "Stealing Fat" by The Dust Brothers. I believe this falls under fair use.

Science Hideout Demonstrates Luminol

Today ScienceHideout will show a demonstration on chemiluminecence- or a reaction when chemicals glow (and no, it is not radioactive). We will be using 3-aminophthalhydrazide, or luminol, as our reaction agent, and potassium ferricyanide as a catalyst that makes it glow. Not to forget hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide which set the reaction. What I am doing: I have 40 mL of water in both the beaker and the flask. The liquid I add into the beaker is a few mL of 4% sodium hydroxide. The powder being put in the beaker is luminol. I add a few mL of hydrogen peroxide to the flask. The red powder I added (only a small amount!) was potassium ferricyanide. I then turn the lights of and mix these.

Luminol: Blood Revealed (Profielwerkstuk Promotion Video)

Promotion video for our assignment about the reliability of luminol. Luminol is a chemical substance. With luminol you can detect traces of blood. Blue light will indicate the presence of blood. This video is made for our presentation at RSG 't Slingerbos Harderwijk in the Netherlands on the 18th of March.

Two solutions are made, solution "A" composed of 5 grams of sodium hydroxide in water and 0.1 grams of luminol. Solution "B" composed of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 0.25 grams of sodium ferrocyanide. When the two solutions are mixed produces a faint blue glow. Then 10 grams potassium ferricyanide is added to the combination to produce an intense blue glow that only lasts for about 20 seconds.

Here, we have the investigative Marla Martinez creating a glowing solution of Luminol; the very same reaction that the police use to identify blood splatter! Now, what they don't show you on those CSI: shows is that you only have about two seconds of light to work off of. "Horatio! We've ran out of luminol. Again!" "Well Frank, let's hope the killer will eventually..." *puts on sunglasses* "Come to light." YYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
