The BMW M3 is one of the finest driver's cars ever made, and I was finally lucky enough to spend a week with one. The heart of the M3 is an exquisite 4.0L V8, making 414hp at a wild 8300rpm. Peak torque is 295 lb-ft, but that entire figure is available at just 3900rpm, a stunning mark of tractability in such a high-revving screamer. Our test car was equipped with a 7-speed DCT (BMW's name for the fancy dual-clutch gearbox), and the transmission—like other vehicle characteristics like throttle response and suspension—can be adjusted from 'nice and easy' to 'neckbreaking.' 2011 M3s equipped with this transmission have gone as low as 3.9 sec to 60mph, and 12.5 sec in the 1/4-mile. Yet due to the engine's powerband, it's remarkably civilized around town. Gearing is perfect; even in 7th gear, the car is never caught flat-footed. In fact, at 2000rpm in 7th the car will be going just 50mph! That is great for acceleration, bad for fuel economy: the M3 manages just 14 mpg city and 20 highway and gets slapped with the gaz-guzzler tax. This black 2008 M3 coupe was brought to us by it's owner with only 4600 miles on the clock. He asked us to transform his M3 from a street car into a dedicated track beast, custom built to his needs. It received a TMS fabricated "standard" race/track cage setup, MOTON coilovers, full race exhaust (with cat-delete), software, TMS Power Pulley, carbon fiber roof (car originally had a sunroof with steel panel), Forgeline 18x10" non-staggered race wheels with 275 width Hoosiers, custom built center console, retained iDrive (strictly monitoring engine oil level and other electronic features), BMW Performance Steering wheel, fire extinguishing system, racing harnesses, baseline suspension setup, and many many more features and products. The end result: This M3 is FAR lighter than a standard "street" E92 M3, and benefits from added horsepower and torque over stock. After some track time and dialing in of both the car and driver, this Turner-built E92 M3 will be the ultimate weapon for track days. Check out this great video from BMW for its GTS version of the M3 Coupe only available in Europe. The video features track laps plus plenty of the car's details. The lightweight GTS gets a full rollcage and seatbelt harnesses as well as a titanium exhaust, lighter interior components and deleted rear seat, etc. The V8 is enlarged to 4.4 liters to boost output to 450hp. It features a special aluminum-silicon crankcase and a wet sump oil supply. I spotted this orange BMW M3 GTS at the Nurburgring. He was present with a Porsche GT3 RS as you can see. www.edmunds.com Before you start sending us flaming e-mails complaining that a comparison between the 2008 Audi S5 and the 2008 BMW M3 Coupe is an obvious mismatch from the get-go, you should know a few things. Our first full test of the $53000, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 was a bit of a revelation. With a 354-horsepower version of Audi's direct-injection 4.2-liter V8 under its hood, the voluptuous Audi S5 ran a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 104 mph, just 0.1 second and 2 mph shy of the 420-hp 2007 Audi RS4 sedan. What's more, the S5's slalom speed is within a couple mph of the harsh-riding RS-spec sedan. "It ran a 13.3? With that kind of speed, who needs a $67000 RS4?" we asked ourselves. We believe so strongly in the 2008 Audi S5 that it earned our Inside Line's inaugural Editors' Choice Award. So we acquired (hastily perhaps) another 2008 Audi S5 and set it against the new 2008 BMW M3 Coupe, a car now fortified with V8 power for the first time. Speed-reading the specifications sheets of these two cars, they seem like natural rivals: the 354-hp, all-wheel-drive 2008 Audi S5 measured against the 414-hp, rear-wheel-drive 2008 BMW M3. But as it turns out, we gave the 2008 Audi S5 a bigger challenge than we had initially intended.
