This is a follow up on Linda Frank, of North Syracuse, who went through over 20 treatments of maggot therapy to treat a heel wound and bone infection as a result of diabetes. In late 2006, doctors told Frank she was going to have her left foot amputated because of the wound, but she researched about maggot therapy on the Internet and asked Dr. Louis Bonavita, of CNY Family Care in East Syracuse, for help. Maggot therapy is where live maggots are applied to a wound and are left there for 1 or 2 days. During that time, the larvae eat away the dead tissue but leave the heathy ones alone. This is Grace Filby's first video clip online during a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship in 2007. The blog is at www.amazingphage.info. Chronic biofilm infections of wounds can be removed naturally and painlessly - eg maggot therapy to enable healing to take place. Location Southwest Regional Woundcare Center, Lubbock. Other strategies include phage therapy (using bacteriophages - available in Poland and Georgia for treating antibiotic-resistant infections including MRSA), surgical debridement, ultrasonic debridement, hyperbaric oxygen, lactoferrin, xylitol etc.. "Roy Rice is keen to let you all know that he was not aware of the maggots moving round at all. He was just glad that the biofilm was being removed painlessly and naturally, rather than having to endure more of the painful process of debridement manually with a sharp scraper. Thank you Roy. Today the heavens opened..." This patient, Roy, had several traumatic leg wounds. The skin blistered and became infected. He was a US Army veteran. You can read about it here: www.amazingphage.info He has since passed away, peacefully in his sleep. He donated his body to medical science. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain 1971 Maggot Brain Synopsis: Maggot Brain is an amazing display of guitarwork recorded in one take. With an opening monologue that sets the tone in this funk psychedelia, Eddie Hazel, supposedly told by George Clinton who, under the influence of LSD, told Hazel to play the song like his mother had died and to play the second half as if he had found out she was alive. Lyrics: [spoken] Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time For y'all have knocked her up. I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe I was not offended For I knew I had to rise above it all Or drown in my own shit. Come on Maggot Brain Go on Maggot Brain

For more tropical adventures, see Mark's "Adventures Among Ants," winner of the 2010 National Outdoor Book Award: www.adventuresamongants.com In this video, Mark W. Moffett (aka "Doctor Bugs") tells the horrifying yet humorous story of a parasitic larva called a botfly entering his hand during an expedition to Belize. The maggot took ten weeks to grow to "maturity," surviving Mark's subsequent trips to Honduras, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. It finally emerged on 2 December 2010, at the end of a meeting with the environmentalist EO Wilson at Harvard. Video of maggot emergence by Paul Thomson.

Link to my site: alejandroerickson.com Post production warning: IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS IN THE CITY MAKE A SMALLER VERSION OF IT! IT WILL SMELL ABSOLUTELY VILE WHEN OPENED. (nuff said ^_^) WARNING NUMBER TWO: The site I got this project from reports that some chickens have died from Botulism. This method should be used WITH CAUTION. I make a fly maggot farm as described on www.themodernhomestead.us I use a car shampoo bucket with holes drilled in it. I fill it with carrion and hang the contraption from a tree. Soon I will know if it works! If it doesn't smell too bad I will be able to bring it to my the chicken house but for the moment the experiment is in my back yard. Michael Hampton plays a version of "Maggot Brain" that is strikingly reminiscent of the original Eddie Hazel classic on his sweet Gibson Flying-V. Check out George Clinton in his Butterfly costume as the curtains close on the first half of the show.

Text from fivehorizons.com : For the encore, Chad Smith (RHCP's drummer) joins PJ and a fascinating version of the Hendrix classic, 'Little Wing.' They jam for about eight minutes, mutating into 'Maggot Brain,' a funkadelic song from the 70s penned by Eddie Hazel. Mike's guitarwork leaves the crowd (and the rest of the band apparently) awestruck. It was later reported that Mike was hospitalized after the two Milwaukee shows due to dehydration and exhaustion.

www.permies.com Brian Kerkvliet of Inspiration Farm in Bellingham Washington shows off an amazing technique of converting funky meat into fresh maggots for chickens. A bucket on a tripod with some dry hay There are holes in the bucket to let the flies in and the maggots out. The straw helps to keep the stink down. I couldn't smell anything, but the flies sure seemed to be able to find it. The maggots go to the bottom of the bucket and the head out the bottom of the bucket to enter into their next stage of devlopement. That's the point where the chickens grab them!
