Never Let Go of Childhood Wonder.

ZenMagnets.com - Zen Magnets are small but curiously strong rare earth super-magnets, 5mm in diameter. How powerful? 8 Times more powerful than the ceramic magnets driving your speakers. 30 Times more powerful than the average fridge magnet. Pull them into a chain, fold them into a fabric, and meld them into limitless shapes both abstract and geometric, flat or 3D. Use them when you need to massage your mind, practice your patience, relieve some boredom or alleviate some stress. Head feeling a bit dull? Maybe your brain just needs to get up and stretch a bit. You know, give it some exercise, get the blood flowing; make that gray matter in your skull stronger, faster. If allowed, Zen magnets can be a great workout for both hemispheres of your brain: The left brain - directing the right hand - that is responsible for logic, math and language. The right brain - controlling the left hand - that is responsible for spatial abilities, creativity and visualization. With total creative control, Zen magnets are more than the average puzzle advent, they are an enjoyable means to actual mental development. Go to ZenMagnets.com What are you waiting for?

Impossible motion: magnet-like slopes

Winner of the Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest 2010 illusioncontest.neuralcorrelate.com Koukichi Sugihara Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences, Japan In this video, wooden balls roll up the slopes just as if they are pulled by a magnet. The behavior of the balls seems impossible, because it is against the gravity. The video is not a computer graphic, but a real scene. What is actually happening is that the orientations of the slopes are perceived oppositely, and hence the descending motion is misinterpreted as ascending motion. This illusion is remarkable in that it is generated by a three-dimensional solid object and physical motion, instead of a two-dimensional picture.

Liquid Magnet Sculpture

A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. Ferrofluids are composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nano-particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration (due to van der Waals and magnetic forces). Although the name may suggest otherwise, ferrofluids do not display ferromagnetism, since they do not retain magnetisation in the absence of an externally applied field. In fact, ferrofluids display paramagnetism, and are often referred as being "superparamagnetic" due to their large magnetic susceptibility. True ferromagnetic fluids are difficult to create at present.

A Magnet Machine

This machine manipulates small spherical rare earth magnets, slicing one at a time from the end of a long chain, moving it around a bit, then dropping it back to re-connect at the tail end of the chain. It also demonstrates a little snippet of science called eddy currents. Watch how slowly the magnet falls through the aluminum tube compared to falling through air: the falling magnet generates an electrical current in the tube, and that current in turn generates a magnetic field that opposes the movement of the magnet, slowing it down dramatically. See en.wikipedia.org if you want more. I made this machine for my father-in-law for his 75th birthday: astute viewers equipped with video analysis software and way too much time on their hands might find that the magnet drops 75mm from the tip of the slicer until caught by the lifter, and that the lifter then drops it through a 75mm long aluminum tube. These magnets are currently a popular toy, and can be purchased on the web or in stores (usually in a set of 216, which makes a 6x6x6 cube). Many different brands exist: Zen Magnets (zenmagnets.com Buckyballs (www.getbuckyballs.com nanodots (www.thenanodots.com Neo Cube (www.theneocube.com and more. I highly recommend this toy! Watch some videos at the above sites. I used a plastic drywall anchor for the main screw drive that pulls the chain of magnets through the machine. The 2 other driven axles -- the slicer and and the lifter -- are geared directly to the screw drive. (Steven ...

Get the Shirts: bit.ly Mess with me on Facebook: facebook.com The big question is: How does this work? The electrical current is traveling through battery, into the screw and wire in a normal fashion. But when then current hits the magnet, the electrical current is pulled out in a radial fashion instead of going straight through. Because the magnet has the ability to move. It spins as the current travels through it.

Mega Man 3 - Magnet Man's Stage

I mentioned in yesterday's video description that I would be doing my favourite Mega Man game next, thus, here we go with Mega Man 3! I decided to try for a little extra spin to go along with this playthrough... My intention is to get through the 8 Robot Master stages without taking any damage. I am not going for a "Perfect" run as the DocRobots in the second run of the stages cheat by being fat... *grumbles* Anyways... first up is Magnet Man... who is probably the robot master a lot of people start off with. If not him, then Top Man... one of the two. His stage is pretty simple, but the fact that it has the disappearing blocks of terror and destruction is one reason why I feel some people would prefer to start with Top Man so following the weakness pattern leads to getting to Magnet Man's stage while having Rush Jet, but eh, the blocks section is easy this time around. Other than that, Magnet Man's stage has... magnets. Is that a surprise? Probably not... Speed runners are probably a fan of the magnets in the first room though, as if you line yourself up right, the magnet can do all the work for you, hehe~ Magnet Man himself is pretty easy. His pattern makes it so he will never reach the far end of either side of the room, so you are mostly safe in the corners. If you stand directly under him while he is firing off his magnet missiles, they will fly away harmlessly off the screen, making him even more sad. The main risk is if you are stuck in the middle of the room while ...

Neodymium Magnets Magnetic Ball Spins for over five minutes LOW FRICTION BEARING

This video illustrates the low friction from a magnetic connection. The powerful Neodymium Magnets are rated at 87-112 pounds of pull force. I have smashed my fingers 4 times. They are really dangerous. The balls are regular steel ball bearings and are NOT magnets. The smaller ones are 3/4 inch and the large ones are 2 inch x 2 pound steel ball bearings. They become magnetized when entering the magnetic field. The further away from the original magnetic field, the lower resistance the steel balls experience. There is an optimal distance based in the weight of the final ball. I am not sure what application this can be used for if any but it is quite amazing for a 5:37 hand spin.

Magnets

"Magnets" is a video feature the unusually strong magnetic properties of Neodymium rare earth magnets. The video was recorded with a Fuji HS10 digital camera at a frame rate of 120 FPS. Two 50w halogen lamps were used to light the scene. The music is a royalty free music track created by Kevin Macleod called "Comfortable Mystery 3". More information about the work of Kevin Macleod is available at... incompetech.com From Wikipedia... Invented in the 1980s, Neodymium magnets are the strongest and most affordable type of rare-earth magnet. Neodymium alloy (Nd2Fe14B) is made of neodymium, iron and boron. Neodymium magnets are typically used in most computer hard drives and a variety of audio speakers. They have the highest magnetic field strength, but are inferior to samarium-cobalt in resistance to oxidation and Curie temperature. Use of protective surface treatments such as gold, nickel, zinc and tin plating and epoxy resin coating can provide corrosion protection where required. Originally, the high cost of these magnets limited their use to applications requiring compactness together with high field strength. Both raw materials and patent licenses were expensive. Beginning in the 1990s, NIB magnets have become steadily less expensive, and the low cost has inspired new uses such as children's magnetic building toys Lance Campeau

Homopolar Roller- Fun With Magnets

Decided to try this after seeing a few videos here on YouTube.. I need stronger & larger diameter magnets but the battery acts as the roller in this case instead of the magnets. All you need is (1) AA Battery and Earth magents on each end. The magnets must be attached to the battery so that two "like poles" face each other. Place a piece of wire, bent in such a way that it makes contact with the magnets on each end and watch it roll... It took a few attempts to make it work but I finally got it.

How dangerous are magnetic items near an MRI magnet?

Fun, games and safety implications with a 4 tesla (T) MRI magnet that was about to be decommissioned. Note how magnetic objects let loose tend to oscillate along the magnet bore. That's because the peak magnetic field gradients are at either end (near the magnet face), causing peak acceleration as the object enters, followed by progressively damped changes of direction.
