Visa pour l'Image - Interview with Magnum photographer Abbas - Part 1/2

The British Journal of Photography talks with Magnum Photos photographer Abbas at this year's Visa pour l'Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan. Part one of two. On September 11, 2001, Abbas was in Siberia when he saw TV reports of the Twin Towers in New York collapsing. The exhibition presents contact sheets, work prints, mock-up layouts and covers that never eventuated, forming a Making of documentary. It goes back over seven years during which Abbas traveled around Islamic countries, showing the questions that challenged the photographer: how has the Oumma (community of believers) responded to the horror of fanaticism? How have Islamism and Islamic terrorism or Jihadism grown out of Islam which is their shared religious belief?

Leica & Magnum: Past Present Future

A core principle which framed the establishment of Magnum Photos in1947 was the belief that photographers should have a point of view in their imagery that transcended any formulaic recording of contemporary events. This tradition continues today with the new series of photographic essays being produced by Magnum and Leica. Burning curiosity breeds evocative expression and it is precisely this spirit which Magnum and Leica will be supporting through this new agreement to create and publish new multimedia essays that will take a deeper look into the stories behind the photographs. The stories will cover new works by Magnum photographers addressing contemporary themes as well as investigations into the archives of photographers career-long obsessions to share Magnum photographer's individual journeys and unique ways of storytelling. The voice on this movie is that of Alice George, former head of Magnum. New stories will be presented on online at www..leica-camera.com, http and inmotion.magnumphotos.com

Leica & Magnum: New York, Ten Years Later by Christopher Anderson

In collaboration with Magnum Photos and The New Yorker, we present "Leica & Magnum: New York, Ten Years Later by Christopher Anderson" a look at New York City ten years after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The photos featured in this video were taken by Magnum Photographer Christopher Anderson. Christopher shares his thoughts on the project: "When The New Yorker magazine commissioned me to create a portfolio of images that could speak to how New York has changed in these ten years, I kept returning to the idea of windows. Windows represent the future. They represent passage and change. They shed light. Through windows we see opportunity and possibility. They sometimes reflect our own selves, and they sometimes act as barriers. In a more concrete way, they are how we New Yorkers physically experience our city. And of course, the idea of windows is directly linked to the two buildings that came down on September 11, 2001. These pictures are connected by the idea of windows. They are my attempt to pay tribute to the resilience of this city."
