Leica & Magnum: Past Present Future

A core principle which framed the establishment of Magnum Photos in1947 was the belief that photographers should have a point of view in their imagery that transcended any formulaic recording of contemporary events. This tradition continues today with the new series of photographic essays being produced by Magnum and Leica. Burning curiosity breeds evocative expression and it is precisely this spirit which Magnum and Leica will be supporting through this new agreement to create and publish new multimedia essays that will take a deeper look into the stories behind the photographs. The stories will cover new works by Magnum photographers addressing contemporary themes as well as investigations into the archives of photographers career-long obsessions to share Magnum photographer's individual journeys and unique ways of storytelling. The voice on this movie is that of Alice George, former head of Magnum. New stories will be presented on online at www..leica-camera.com, http and inmotion.magnumphotos.com

Time of Change by Bruce Davidson/ Magnum Photos

he period from 1961 - 1965 was the defining era of the American civil rights movement. As a participant and observer of this struggle for racial equality, Bruce Davidson chronicled the demonstrations, the protests, the aftermath of the bombings, and the social and political tumult that arose out of the conflict. "Time of Change" is a testament to the everyday lives of the people who fought against accepted social norms of segregation, poverty, and discrimination.

Leica & Magnum: Photographs from the Streets of Chicago by Alex Webb

This photo essay, part of our collaboration with Magnum Photos, documents Alex Webb's exploration of Chicago and the Loop. Inspired in part by one of his early influences, Ray Metzker's "My Camera and I in the Loop," he explores the streets of the US's "Second City." Though unlike the street photographers of the so-called Chicago School (Callahan, Metzger, Sturr, Sterling), Alex Webb has chosen to photograph the city's multitudinous character in color. Having spent most of his 30 year long career shooting outside of the US, Alex Webb turns his lens to his home nation during this very important election year. 2nd Tour, Hope I Don't Die - Magnum Photos

SEE MORE: inmotion.magnumphotos.com The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have lost America's attention, and some would say, never really had it. Despite all the immediacy of new media, America's view of these wars has largely been sanitized, incomplete and remote. Photographer Peter van Agtmael aims to change our perceptions with his compelling new book, 2nd Tour Hope I Don't Die. From 2006 through 2008, Peter van Agtmael was an embedded photographer who followed the sweep of the conflicts between Iraq, Afghanistan and the United States. He captured the range of the American experience, from chaotic night raids in Iraqi cities to long patrols through isolated valleys in the mountains of Afghanistan. The images are unsparing yet nuanced, revealing tense medical evacuations and graphic casualties of suicide bombings as well as moving portraits of young soldiers and their families recuperating, mourning, and suffering. In the end a delicate humanity emerges amid the chaos and brutality of combat. The book distills - in van Agtmael's photographs and words - the complexity of that experience from the point of view of a young man seeing many others of his generation facing tough choices, grave responsibilities and unpredictable fates. By turns gritty, haunting, and deeply moving, the book is a cogent reminder of the stark and enduring realities of war. This is a book about conflict, but also an intimate journey into the lives of the people van Agtmael met and befriended. Just 24 ...

It came as no surprise that he joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in July 2010. Nahr also spoke at our recent event in Paris with Magnum Photos to discuss "Crises and catastrophes in pictures. Leica and Magnum: The Spirit Lives Here by Bruce Gilden

In our latest photo essay made in collaboration with Magnum Photos, we follow Bruce Gilden to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Bruce Gilden first traveled to Haiti in 1984 and made 19 trips over the course of 10 years, culminating in his book titled, quite simply, "Haiti". In February and March 2010, he went back to Port-au-Prince to witness firsthand what had happened in the wake of the earthquake. What he found was a city destroyed and people who are poor of everything but grace, pride and a distinctive soul. During his most recent trip this past September, he went back to document a refugee camp that has sprung up across the street from the half-destroyed presidential palace in downtown Port-au-Prince. In this video, Gilden shares his audio, video and photo captures of this neighborhood of decorated huts built out of scavenged corrugated tin and cardboard, recreated with all the elements of Haitian life as if the people knew right away that this temporary settlement would be their long term home. Visa pour l'Image - Interview with Magnum photographer Abbas - Part 1/2

The British Journal of Photography talks with Magnum Photos photographer Abbas at this year's Visa pour l'Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan. Part one of two. On September 11, 2001, Abbas was in Siberia when he saw TV reports of the Twin Towers in New York collapsing. The exhibition presents contact sheets, work prints, mock-up layouts and covers that never eventuated, forming a Making of documentary. It goes back over seven years during which Abbas traveled around Islamic countries, showing the questions that challenged the photographer: how has the Oumma (community of believers) responded to the horror of fanaticism? How have Islamism and Islamic terrorism or Jihadism grown out of Islam which is their shared religious belief?

Magnum In Motion - One Planet, One Chance

Climate change will affect rainfall, temperature and water availability for agriculture in vulnerable area's. The danger is that extreme food insecurity episodes will become more common. Major killer diseases could expand their coverage. Rich countries are already preparing public health to deal with future climate shocks. For poor countries it is much harder: they need international support to adapt. We are drifting into a world of adaptation apartheid. The Last Days of W

"During these last days of the administration, what is the point of protest, satire or any other sort of rabble-rousing? In assembling this collection of pictures Ive made over the last eight years, Im not really trying to accomplish much at all. But as President Bush once said, 'One of the great things about books is, sometimes there are some fantastic pictures," Alec Soth says about his self-published artist book printed on newsprint in 2008. Alec Soth's images are paired with Bushisms, which refers to mispronunciations, unconventional words and phrasings by George W. Bush. ______________________________________ Founded in New York, in 2004, Magnum In Motion is the multimedia digital studio of Magnum Photos. Leica & Magnum: New York, Ten Years Later by Christopher Anderson

In collaboration with Magnum Photos and The New Yorker, we present "Leica & Magnum: New York, Ten Years Later by Christopher Anderson" a look at New York City ten years after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The photos featured in this video were taken by Magnum Photographer Christopher Anderson. Christopher shares his thoughts on the project: "When The New Yorker magazine commissioned me to create a portfolio of images that could speak to how New York has changed in these ten years, I kept returning to the idea of windows. Windows represent the future. They represent passage and change. They shed light. Through windows we see opportunity and possibility. They sometimes reflect our own selves, and they sometimes act as barriers. In a more concrete way, they are how we New Yorkers physically experience our city. And of course, the idea of windows is directly linked to the two buildings that came down on September 11, 2001. These pictures are connected by the idea of windows. They are my attempt to pay tribute to the resilience of this city."

Leica and Magnum: Past Present Future

Leica and Magnum - Focus on the Future Magnum Photos International, Inc. and Leica Camera AG have begun a technological and photographic collaboration that will build upon almost a century's worth of shared history between these two world-renowned photographic institutions. Building on their shared history Magnum and Leica agreed to collaborate on a series of projects that continue their longstanding dedication to independent documentary photography. Beginning in the spring of 2011, Leica will sponsor the creation of a series of independently produced multimedia essays that will highlight the personal journeys and insatiable curiosity of Magnum photographers. The stories will be published at the homepages of Magnum Photos, the LFI Magazine, and also at this homepage. In addition to supporting individual projects, Leica and Magnum will use the production of the new essays as an opportunity to learn from Magnum photographers' experiences in the field with the latest Leica equipment and thus develop the Leica portfolio according to the needs of photographers world-wide.
