Two Stage HHO Rocket.mpg

Two stage water/hydrogen/oxygen rocket with electronic ignition. Hydrogen and oxygen gas is generated by passing electricity through water containing Baking Soda to make the water conductive. Stainless steel strainers are used as electrodes. The explosive gas is collected with a funnel into a 2 liter soda bottle using water displacement. Air is mixed with the gas to reduce its explosive property. An Estes rocket igniter is used to explode the gas, forcing water out of the bottle propelling the rocket. An electronic sequencing circuit powered by a 9 volt battery ignites the lower stage, then the upper stage one second later. The construction details will be available in an upcoming issue of Make Magazine. Suggested Improvements; I used 1/3 HHO (hydrogen/oxygen) 1/3 air and 1/3 water. I believe the bottle can withstand more pressure so I suggest trying 50 % HHO, 30% air and 20% water. The first stage only reached about 10 feet before the second stage fired one second later, so I would try a 3 or 4 second delay.

Cigar Box Amp 3/4 watt LM386-3 As seen at Makezine

I just got a load of parts in, and I built this as my first run to see how great a 4 inch speaker would sound at .75 watts. I also have something that I didn't have before: a 100 ohm potentiometer!!! So now my volume knobs will work in a nice, linear fashion. Yay, upgrades!!! As usual, you can find me at tech-tut.com, and you can find these amps in limited supply at http Just look for Cigar Box Amps. :) Thanks for viewing.

How-To: Set up an HF portable radio while hiking

Fall is the perfect time for hiking, it's not too hot and not too cold. Last weekend I took a day trip to hike up High Mountain in New Jersey and activate SOTA summit W2/NJ008. It's really easy to set up an HF portable radio and not a whole lot to carry up the mountain. This video shows how to get set up including how to hang the antenna in a cluster of trees and making contact with Italy. blog.makezine.com
