Hey Manatee, Can You Hear Me Now? Good.

Manatees can't hear the low sounds of boat engines, which is why the animals are frequently injured, a researcher says. A high-pitched alarm could solve the problem.

Manatee visiting dock at Hilton Head Island

We were out to eat at the harbor on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. As we were sitting and ordering our drinks, two ladies came up to us, because we were sitting right where the dock began, to let us know that they just saw a Manatee. A MANATEE!!! Well, of course, Melissa jumped up, grabbed the camera and this is the first of two videos she got of the Manatee. A Manatee, in the wild, one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Manatee Encounter

One of the only places it is legal to interact with manatees is Crystal River. Even here, you must remain on the surface, not chase the manatee and only touch with one hand. Sometimes the manatee comes to you and wants to be scratched.
Evolution: Best Example of Macroevolution: Manatees

I present a group of features of manatees, and a couple of fossils, that together make manatee origins probably one of the best single examples of macroevolution known. References for the images I used did not show up well in the video, so someone requested I add them here. RESCUED MANATEES MAKE THEIR PUBLIC DEBUT

The four young manatees brought to the Columbus Zoo on April 6 for rehabilitation after they were rescued in Florida can now be seen at the Zoos Manatee Coast. Even though an average manatee can weigh more than 1000 lbs. they have very little body fat to keep them warm and it is difficult for a manatee to survive in water when the temperature is below 68 degrees. In cold water the manatees metabolism slows leading to digestion problems, decreased appetite, and associated weight loss which weakens their immune systems and makes them vulnerable to environmental toxins resulting in infections and skin sores. It has been a difficult year for endangered manatees due to prolonged, record low temperatures in Florida resulting in the vast majority of the more than 450 manatee deaths and more than 50 manatees rescued in the first three months of 2010. That total breaks the annual record of 429 manatee deaths in all of 2009. Collisions with boats also pose a major threat to manatees, whose natural habitat is Floridas slow moving rivers and shallow coastal areas. At the end of 2009 there were approximately 3800 manatees. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium supports field conservation projects for three of the four living species of manatees through our Conservation Fund. Providing grants to researchers on three continents (North America, South America, and Africa), the Zoo contributes to rescue and rehabilitation in Florida, environmental education focused on the Amazonian manatee in ...

Blue Springs State Park Manatees Fl

Follow Hylonlad blog at: www.artspeck.com Blue Springs State Park Manatees Fl Blue Springs State Park is about 30 miles North of Orlando, just 2 miles West of Orange City along French Avenue, not far from another of Florida State Parks, Deleon Springs. I have always found, without exception that Florida State Parks are always well organised for the visitor, especially Blue Springs State Park which is well patrolled by wardens, and a really safe place to visit. Blue Springs State Park is a designated manatee refuge, well known for its manatee migration during the winter months. Manatees are sometimes called Sea Cows, and resemble a mini submarine. Be sure to take your video camera. Manatee Attack - A Manatee tries to bite off my Hand!

Crystal River, Three Sisters Springs, February 2010: This young manatee was playing with me for some five minutes. What really made me sick: During my one week stay at Crystal River I saw so many snorkellers, u/w photographers and -videographers who - although strictly forbidden - were chasing, harassing and diving down to the manatees. This guy (or girlie??) here came up to me to play while I was drifting motionless on the surface. Obviously, we both enjoyed it!

Crystal River Manatees - Mom with Nursing Baby - www.Riverventures.com

www.riverventures.com - A sweet babay manatee nursing from its mother, in Hunter's Spring located just off of King's Bay in Crystal River, Florida. Being able to swim near this nursing baby and film them was outstanding. We entered the water and immediately we were approched by the baby. The baby interacted with us for quite some time before breaking off for breakfast. Once it had a full belly it swam back over to us and played some more.
