occupation: manicurist. nguyen

I wanted to do a different view on occupation than the standard this is this job and this is what this job would consist. There is so much more to being a manicurist than meet the eyes. It's more of a lifestyle than just a job for most of manicurist. There is the stereo type that only Asians do nails. There is truth to this stereotype. Most manicurists are Asians. The majority of Asian manicurist work at a salon that is family owned or they know the owner of the salon. The work day is really long. We work six days a week and at least ten hours a day. We only make commission. Most salons have a room in the back that house supplies and also a second home. Manicurists work as self employed. There are no health benefits, no retirement plans, and no way to advance your career unless you open up your own salon. We work with power tools and dangerous chemicals. The long term heath risk working with all the chemical has never been studied. I believe that the majority of manicurists are Asians because of these working conditions. Aside from the hard working conditions, there are also perks with being a manicurist. Even though you only work on commission, you are your own boss. As a manicurist the work schedule can be very flexible. You can work as much or as little as you want. The more hours you work the more potentials clients you can have, and the more money you can make. When you have a license, you have the license for life if you pay to renew it every four years.
