Barry Manilow - Can't Smile Without You

Barry Manilow (born June 17, 1943[1]) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, producer, conductor, and performer, best known for such recordings as "Could It Be Magic", "Mandy", "Can't Smile Without You", and "Copacabana (At the Copa)." In 1978, five of his albums were on the best-selling charts simultaneously, a feat equalled only by Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Mathis. He has recorded a string of Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums that have resulted in his being named Radio & Records number one Adult Contemporary artist and winning three straight American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. Between 1974 - 1979 Manilow had 10 number 1 singles, five of which were consecutive. Several well-known entertainers have given Manilow their "stamp of approval," including Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s regarding Manilow, "He's next." In 1988, Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, "Don't stop what you're doing, man. We're all inspired by you."[2]

Barry Manilow - 1977 - The First Barry Manilow Special.

The First Barry Manilow Special: The beloved singer's first big network showcase aired on March 2, 1977 on ABC and went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Music Special for Manilow, Executive Producer Miles Lourie and Producer and Director Steve Binder. The special combines rousing performances filmed at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, with studio segments that find Manilow retracing his early roots. The First Barry Manilow Special also features a guest appearance by future director Penny Marshall, then of Laverne and Shirley fame. Manilow displays great range with outstanding renditions of "It's A Miracle," "This One's For You," "Could It Be Magic?" a medley of "Jump, Shout Boogie" and "Bandstand Boogie," and "I Write The Songs." The special also features a moving dramatic music sequence featuring "New York City Rhythm," "Sandra" and "Early Morning Strangers." Not to be missed: Barry Manilow celebrates his commercial past by really "selling" his classic "A Very Strange Medley." Look back in pleasure at The First Barry Manilow special -- it remains a gem as sparkly as Manilow's shirts. 1. It's A Miracle 2. This One's For You 3. Could It Be Magic? 4. Mandy 5. Barry Manilow - 1980 - One Voice TV Special with Dionne Warwick

Barry Manilow's first television special of the Eighties -- is a singular pleasure. The specials starts with Manilow dressed in all black, offering what he describes as "his low-key opening" and concludes with a moving choral rendition of "One Voice." Throughout, he offers a sophisticated, eclectic musical blend with an appealingly intimate feel. One of the standout moments finds Manilow collaborating with Dionne Warwick, who is in excellent form, singing her hits "Deja Vu" and "I'll Never Love This Way Again" from the smash 1979 "Dionne" album he produced for her. One Voice also finds artfully demonstrating his own range performing everything from the disco-rocky "Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed" to Frank Loesser and Julie Styne's "I Don't Wanna Walk Without You." The later number is artfully presented as a World War II mini-movie that goes from color to black and white within the song. Even more memorable is a segment in which Manilow plays two moving songs about fathers and sons, first "Sunday Father," which he wrote with Adrienne Anderson, and then a cover of Ian Hunter's "Ships," stopping in between to comment on his relationship with his own father. It's exceptionally candid, revealing television and -- as one comes to expect from Manilow -- absolutely beautiful music. One Voice (1980) 1. You Could Show Me 2. Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed 3. Barry Manilow - 1979 - The Third Barry Manilow Special.

The Third Barry Manilow Special: The third time would prove a charm for The Third Barry Manilow Special, which first aired on ABC on May 23, 1979. Directed by Don Mischer, this is variety television with a tremendous amount of variety, right from a comic opening sketch that finds Manilow driving badly around the Hollywood sign to a simple, powerful concluding performance of "Somewhere In The Night." Among the many highlights in between, the special features a grand extended sequence in which Barry performs "I Write The Songs" as a salute to the great cinematic musicals, even hoofing gamely with dancers channeling Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller and Cyd Charisse. In fact, Kevin Carlisle won the Emmy for Oustanding Achievement in Choreography for his work here. The late, great John Denver appears not only performing his own "What's On Your Mind," but also harmonizing with Manilow on a fine medley of enduring Everly Brothers' hits. Featuring performances of "Ready To Take A Chance Again," "(Why Don't We Try) A Slow Dance," "Copacabana (At The Copa)" and "Even Now," The Third Barry Manilow Special is entirely entertaining -- even now. 1. Ready To Take A Chance Again 2. Weekend In New England 3. (Why Don't We Try) A Slow Dance 4. I Write The Songs 5. What's On Your Mind (John Denver) 6. Everely Brothers Medley (with John Denver) 7. Could It Be Magic Spirit move me every time I'm near you, whirling like a cyclone in my mind. Sweet Melissa, angel of my lifetime, answer to all answers I can find. Baby I love you, come, come, come into my arms, let me know the wonder of all of you, baby I want you, now, now, now and hold on fast, could this be the magic at last. Lady take me high upon a hillside, high up where the stallion meets the sun. I could love you, build my world around you, never leave you 'til my life is done. Baby I love you, come, come, come into my arms, let me know the wonder of all of you, and baby I want you, now, oh now, wow now, oh now and hold on fast, could this be the magic at last. Barry Manilow - 1988 - Big Fun On Swing Street.

Barry Manilow: Big Fun On Swing Street: In the beginning of 1988's highly musical and endlessly entertaining Barry Manilow: Big Fun On Swing Street, Manilow says he has often wondered: "What if you took a little bit of the Forties and a little bit of the Eighties and put them together?" before adding, "Now we're not talking about Count Basie meets the Beastie Boys here." No, we're not, but this extremely vivid, jam-packed hour special does feel at times like some great MGM musical in bold MTV colors -- a way cool party with lots of charming retro touches. Spotlighting the music of Manilow's ambitious and accomplished albums "2:00 AM Paradise Café" and "Swing Street," the special features a wide range of musical guest stars including Carmen McRae, Gerry Mulligan, Kid Creole and The Coconuts, Phyllis Hyman, the vocal group Full Swing, Diane Schuur, Tom Scott, and Stanley Clarke. Singing a standard like "Stardust," Manilow seems entirely at home in a performance that feels like a great old Frank Sinatra album cover come to life. Other highlights include Manilow's solo rendition of "When October Goes" and a duet with Schuur of "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" with Mulligan, Scott and Manilow's saxophonist Dana Robbins all soloing strongly. True to its name, Barry Manilow: Big Fun On Swing Street is a Manilow TV special that really swings. 1. Swing Street 2. Big Fun 3. Right This Way 4. Hey Mambo (with Kid Creole and The Coconuts 5. Barry Manilow - 1978 - Second Barry Manilow Special.

The Second Barry Manilow Special: The Second Barry Manilow Special -- which aired on ABC in 1978 and received four richly deserved Emmy nominations -- is not simply the second coming of Manilow's first television special. Instead, it is a brilliantly inventive and creative hour of musical television in its own right. Almost certainly, it is also the only TV show you will ever see that features both the "Genius of Soul" Ray Charles and Barry Manilow's mother -- not necessarily in that order. The Second Barry Manilow Special is an inspired behind-the-scenes affair in which Barry Manilow explores his music inside the mostly empty Pantages Theater, mostly alone (including excellent renditions of "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" and "All The Time"), but he also sings with children, senior citizens and even a couple of animated skunks. One of the many highlights of the show is the appearance of Ray Charles, who performs an absolutely stunning version of Manilow's "One Of These Days," before dueting with Manilow on "It's A Miracle." In the show's concluding act, Manilow sings "Can't Smile Without You" and "Looks Like We Made It" before a packed and pleased Pantages crowd, but for most of this exceptional show no one is watching -- other than the crew and millions of people on ABC. As for the appearance of Barry's mother -- she's very good...and very proud. 1. Beautiful Music 2. Daybreak 3. I Was A Fool (To Let You Go) 4. Copacabana (At The Copa) 5. ''Bring On Tomorrow'' - Barry Manilow - August 25th, 2011

Here's something different. Video was not permitted at Barry's concert at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga, NY, so I recorded the audio and incorporated photos that I took ay the concert. The concert was awesome! Barry seemed to be at least 20 years younger and gave a very, very appreciative audience a performance to remember. He received several standing ovations and was visibly moved by crowd. His performance that night, of ''Even Now'' was otherworldly and made the 4 hour ride home well worth it. Incredible. Now, this clip is not without flaws. This is the first time I've done this so please forgive any errors. Hope you like it.
