In the line of fire over allegations of a quid pro quo in the 2G scam, Union Minister DayanidhiMaran on Thursday (June 2) rejected charges that his family owned Sun Television Network was a beneficiary of pay-offs by a Malaysian company which benefitted from equity sold by Aircel. Talking to reporters at the Chennai airport here tonight, he said, "The allegations are a systematically planned campaign to malign me and my party." The Textile Minister said that he became a "political untouchable" after tendering his resignation in May 2008. "After I resigned in May, there could have been an investigation. That was my position then. I was a political untouchable during that period. When I was not a minister nobody wanted to get in touch with me. I have never helped anyone. In a severe jolt to Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran, CBI on Wednesday (July 6) charged him in the Supreme Court with "forcing" a Chennai-based telecom promoter to sell his stakes in Aircel to a Malaysian firm in 2006, a development that may threaten his continuance in the cabinet. The JPC probing spectrum scam will summon all telecom ministers over the last 12 years, including Maran. Meanwhile, sources tell CNN-IBN that Maran will be asked to quit if the CBI files an FRI against him the Sun-Maxis deal. After A raja, the countdown seems to have begun for yet another DMK minister. Prime Minister's office has indicated that textile minister Dayanidhi Maran will have to quit if CBI names him in an FIR. CBI is probing the former telecom minister's role in the Aircel-Maxis deal. Sivasankaran, the founder of Aircel in his statement to CBI, has alleged that he was arm twisted by Maran to sell his stake to Malaysian firm Maxis and in return maxis invested close to Rs 600 crores in Maran family owned Sun direct. CBI sources said that Sivasankaran in his statement recorded on Monday said that he was even willing to offload 49 per cent equity and keep 51 per cent stake of Aircel, but Maran strangulated his telecom business to the extent that he was forced to sell Aircel to Maxis and leave India. According to sources, Sivasankaran also alleged that DOT officials deliberately stone walled his telecom license application in seven circles at Maran's behest. These licenses were then awarded to Aircel when Maxis took over controlling stake. But Maran maintains that he is innocent.
