Mardi Gras 1956: Through My Father's Lens (Boing Boing Video)

Boing Boing Video presents a special episode featuring rare and historic film from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1956. Artist Mar Dore stumbled on a box of slides in her family's home in Texas and inside, discovered photographs that her father took of the parades in the era of "Mad Men." That box, like a time capsule she says, opened a door into history. "The photos in this documentary were taken by my Father, John Woodward Mizenko. The photos were taken on February 12th and on Mardi Gras Day, February 14th, 1956, on the Mid-City route and on Canal Street in front of Miller-Wohls Department Store, which is no longer there. My father was born in the small town of Covington, Louisiana in 1921. He was a chemical engineer, inventor and builder. He worked for major oil companies and we had to move around a lot. The film was shot close to where my father was taking photos. I keep looking for his face in the crowds. He discovered that he had lymphoma cancer in 1990. His work had exposed him to toxic chemicals for decades, chemicals that caused cancer. It claimed his life in 1991. These photographs celebrate his memory, and even though Ive not yet found his face in those crowds, the photographs themselves illustrate the joy he took in capturing the spirit of Mardi Gras and its wonderful celebration of life." Carnival/Mardi Gras Inspired Makeup Halloween "Collab with MissPixieLulu"

♡ Please Open Here for product information and more ♡ This is a fun collaboration between myself and the lovely MissPixieLulu. We chose the theme of 'Mardi Gras/Carnival' for our looks which would be great for year round costume, fancy dress parties and Halloween. I really love how our looks are based on the same theme but are completely contrasting! I hope that you enjoy this tutorial and see Lucy's interpretation here: www.youtube.com For my look I used mainly black and white with a touch of red/fuchsia for a bit of 'pop'. I went with the 'harlequin/pantomime' inspiration with a half face mask. I found out that white and black are rather tricky to work with together and can get a bit messy so if you attempt this look yourself, allow yourself time. This is my first attempt at a face mask and working with 'clown white' ... so please be kind :) A full description on how I made my mask and headpiece and put together my costume will be on my blog: lilcammo93.blogspot.com Products Used: Clown White -- local costume store Black Gel Liner -- Maybelline Medusa's Makeup -- Eyeshadow -- Electro Black NYX Doll Eyed Mascara (waterproof) Mix of cream and white eyeshadow (to set clown white) Limecrime Magic Eye Dust -- Abracadabra (pink eyeshadow) False Lashes Red Lip Liner pencil Balmshell Lipgloss Black beads/gems -- craft store Music Used: 'New Friday' by SLGuitar92 - www.youtube.com 'Rivers Rising' by SLGuitar92 - www.youtube.com Where to find me :) Blog : lilcammo93.blogspot ...

Paul Simon - Take Me to the Mardi Gras + lyrics

Paul Simon - Take Me to the Mardi Gras Lyrics: C'mon take me to the Mardi Gras Where the people sing and play Where the dancing is elite And there's music in the street Both night and day Hurry take me to the Mardi Gras In the city of my dreams You can legalize your lows You can wear your summer clothes In the New Orleans And I will lay my burden down Rest my head upon that shore And when I wear that starry crown I won't be wanting anymore Take your burdens to the Mardi Gras Let the music wash your soul You can mingle in the street You can jingle to the beat of Jelly Roll Tumba, tumba, tumba, Mardi Gras Tumba, tumba, tumba, day Mm------------

Mardi Gras Indians practicing their chants and calls!!

Mardi Gras Indians practicing their chants and calls after the funeral of the late Big Queen Chief Barbara. The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom around early to mid 1800s. They have never forgotten this support. The chants that you hear are usually stories of the struggles in the neighborhood, violence, poverty, celebration of life or death etc,,. These chants and calls are passed down from generation to generation.

Big Chief Bo Dollis on Mardi Gras 2008: Wild Magnolias and Wild Red Flames

Big Chief Bo Dollis is at the end of this video. He is the focus of this meeting of Mardi Gras indians. While the Rex Krewe rolled down St. Charles Avenue, Mardi Gras Indians paraded on the backstreets of New Orleans. This meeting of the Big Chief of the Wild Red Flames and Big Chief Bo Dollis of the Wild Magnolias took place at 2nd and Dryades Streets. Big Chief Bo is under the feathered arch at the end of the clip. He is flanked by Big Queen Rita and the rest of his tribe. A typical band of musicians followed the Flames playing percussion instruments providing backdrop for the Indian chant "Lets Go Get Em."
