My video diary of the Marmotte cyclosportive, held in the French Alps on 4th July, 2009. The 174 kilometre event starts in Bourg d'Oisans and takes in the climbs of the Tour de France with the Col du Glandon, Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galbiier and finishes at the legendary ski resort of Alpe d'Huez. In total, 7000 riders started the event which climbed 5000 metres of vertical ascent over the 174 kilometres. This was my seventh Marmotte event, and I finished in 8 hours and 18 minutes, seven and a half minutes faster than in 2008.

This little folky tune, also known as "Lied des Marmottenbuben", was the result of a collaboration between two of the heavyweights of German culture: it's a setting by Beethoven of words written (many years earlier) by Goethe. Still sung around campfires in Germany today, and as I think it sounds much better that way than as a parlour piano piece, I'm just playing the simple unadorned melody. Played on my Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin.

La Marmotte is the toughest cycling sportive for amateurs in the world. It takes place on the first Saturday in July. 174 km of cycling, four mountains and a staggering 15000 feet of climbing. This is my personal video blog. My finishing time was 9 hours and 31 minutes. I got Gold for my age group (50- 59). This was my first Marmotte.
