Unsung heroes to mark Mashujaa Day

www.ntv.co.ke Kenyans will tomorrow (Thursday) mark the second Mashujaa day. A day set aside to honour heroes and heroines who liberated the country from colonialists. And as Ntv's Pamela Asigi reports among those looking forward to this day are two Mau Mau heroes from Embu.

www.ntv.co.ke For the umpteenth time President Mwai KIbaki and prime minister Raila Odinga are declaring total war against corruption. The pledge comes a day after the suspension of higher education minister William Ruto over corruption related charges. Speaking at the Nyayo National Stadium, the two principles also paid a glowing tribute to freedom fighters and Kenyans who have brought fame to the country. Richard Chacha reports on the speeches on the historic day.

Kanunga mob disrupts Mashujaa fete

www.ntv.co.ke An angry mob from Kanunga in Kiambu disrupted Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ndumberi grounds, protesting against insecurity in the area.The mob accused the area DC of tolerating insecurity in the area that has led to the loss of numerous lives. The demonstrations came after a 25 year old man Michael Ndungu was shot dead by unknown gangsters, who attacked him in his home. Three other people have been killed in the last three weeks.

Kenyan's set to celebrate Mashujaa day

Kenyans are preparing to usher in a new public holiday under the new constitution. Mashujaa day has replaced Kenyatta day, which has long been celebrated every 20th of October to honour independence heroes, with the main focus being placed on the country's founding president. Lenana high school, one of the few pre-colonial schools in kenya, held a ceremony to honour Laibon Ole Lenana, who the school is named after.

President Mwai Kibaki led Kenyans in marking the inaugural Mashujaa Day from the Nyayo National Stadium. During the function, The President, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka celebrated Kenyan heroes and heroines and announced that government would establish a national heroes monument at the heroes corner in Uhuru gardens.. And as Chris Thairu reports, the day came with high expectations for all the heroes even as the government committed itself in strictly adhering to the implementation of the new constitution.

Now, the Lancaster House Conference of 1962 was to establish the terms of self-governance for Kenya. It was thought that the British, in relinquishing the colony of Kenya, might be ready to correct some of their past wrongs. Not wishing to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity, the Maasai sent a delegation to London to make their case. Tom Mboya spoke to John Keen who was in that delegation and he revealed who he thinks falls within the defination of a Kenyans Shujaa.
