I wrote the poem Final Farewell many years ago. It is written in the perspective of a child living and dying in Mauthausen. The most famous method of torture and death was the staircase of death which I referred in my poem. Prisoners were forced to carry roughly-hewn blocks of stone — often weighing as much as 50 kilograms (110 lb) — up the 186 stairs - one behind the other. As a result, many exhausted prisoners collapsed in front of the other prisoners in the line, and then fell on top of the other prisoners, creating a horrific domino effect; the first prisoner falling onto the next, and so on, all the way down the stairs. Such brutality was not accidental. The SS guards would often force prisoners — exhausted from hours of hard labour without sufficient food and water — to race up the stairs carrying blocks of stone. Those who survived the ordeal would often be placed in a line-up at the edge of a cliff known as "The Parachute Wall" (German: Fallschirmspringerwand). At gun-point each prisoner would have the option of being shot, or to push the prisoner in front of them off of the cliff. Other common methods of extermination of prisoners, who were either sick, unfit for further labour or as a means of collective responsibility or after escape attempts included: Being beaten to death (by the SS and Kapos) Icy showers - some 3000 inmates died of hypothermia - after having being forced to take an icy cold shower - and who were then left outside in cold weather. The poet Iacovos Kambanellis was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of "Mauthausen". In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and he gave Mikis the opportunity to set them to music. Mikis did this with much pleasure, firstly because he liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly because he was locked up during the Nazi occupation in Italian and German prisons, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, that history that must never be forgotten. Picture: Liberated prisoners in the Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, Austria, give rousing welcome to Cavalrymen of the 11th Armored Division. The banner across the wall was made by Spanish Loyalist prisoners. It says "The Spanish Antifascists greet the Liberating Forces". The text is written in English and Russian as well. 6 may 1945

thefilmarchive.org Bergen-Belsen (or Belsen) was a Nazi concentration camp in Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany, southwest of the town of Bergen near Celle. Originally established as the prisoner of war camp Stalag XI-C, in 1943 it became a concentration camp on the orders of Heinrich Himmler, where Jewish hostages were held with the intention of exchanging them for German prisoners of war held overseas. Later still the name was applied to the displaced persons camp established nearby, but it is most commonly associated with the concentration camp it became as conditions deteriorated between 1943-1945. During this time an estimated 50000 Russian prisoners of war and a further 50000 inmates died there, up to 35000 of them dying of typhus in the first few months of 1945. Many of the former SS staff that survived the typhus epidemic were tried by the British at the Belsen Trial. At the trial, the world got its first view of Irma Grese, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Juana Bormann, Fritz Klein, Josef Kramer, and the rest of the SS men and women who before served at Mittelbau Dora, Ravensbrück, Auschwitz I, II, III, and Neuengamme. Many of the female guards had served at small Gross Rosen subcamps at Neusalz, Langenleuba, and the Mittelbau-Dora subcamp at Gross Werther. Dozens of the personnel of Bergen-Belsen were found guilty of murder and of crimes against humanity, and most of those were hanged.

This is from the Mauthasen Concentration/Labor camp in Austria. Thousands of people died here during the Holocust. It was the worst concentration camp of them all. they did hard labor in a quary, working 11 hours a day carrying 100 lb rocks up the steps and the hill that you see at the end.

This is a short video of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp quarry. Prisoners were forced to work in the quarry until death. The quarry had "death stairs" that the prisoners were forced to carry large stones (100 lbs+) up, but then at the top of the stairs guards would push them back down the stairs.
