UP 2002 Leads Manifest at Maywood, Illinois, Plus Metra, 10.12.11
I was not expecting Union Pacific SD70M #2002, the commemorative engine for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, to be leading this eastbound manifest through Maywood, but indeed it was- this resulted in not having any warning to set up a better shot, so the light and angle was less-than-perfect. Nevertheless, it was nice to see it for the first time! The crossing gates here were being repaired, so the gates stayed up and workers were flagging traffic through. Maywood is across the Des Plaines River from River Forest, where the triple-track of UP's ex-C&NW Geneva Subdivision narrows from three tracks to two for the rest of the distance into Proviso Yard. The C&NW-vintage signals controlling this can be seen in the distance. ~Thanks for watching!~

Most Americans have never seen one before. When Stephen Mosca takes his out on the street, he says he's treated like a mini Mini Cooper. A velomobile guarantees you protection from rain, sun and even cold, but you still need to pedal. Because underneath the aerodynamic shell that gives it the sleek look of a minicar lies a recumbent bicycle. The fairing (shell) not only helps protect drivers against the elements (and even collisions to some extent), but it gives it an aerodynamic advantages making it one of the fastest bicycles on the road. Mosca bought his first velomobile about ten years ago when he was looking for something that would protect him on his daily commute. Train 1: At Oak Park, an outbound Metra / Union Pacific- West Line train with 6 cars, one an ex-CNW Pullman, blows past the Oak Park Avenue stop on CTA's Green Line as an 'L' train to Ashland/63rd departs. F40PH #150 leads. Train 2: Now the location is just east of the Maywood Metra station, where an inbound UP-W Line train zips across First Ave and approaches River Forest. F40PH #175, the "Village of Worth" pushes. Train 3: Now at CP Vale in River Forest, the location where Union Pacific's ex-Chicago & Northwestern main line widens going eastbound from two tracks to three, a hot Union Pacific intermodal train takes the middle main and passes the pretty old River Forest station. Almost-brand-new ES44AC #7899 and flared-radiator SD70M #5078 lead. Also nearly-new, SD70ACe #8461 pushes in DPU mode. The bridge in the background is a rarely-used CN line, the ex-WC, exx-Soo main into Chicago.
