Paul McGann tals to us whilst meeting fans at the Entertainment Media Show 2011 at Earls Court in London. Paul is an English actor who made his name on the BBC serial The Monocled Mutineer, in which he played the lead role. He is now perhaps best known for his role in Withnail and I, and for portraying the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 Doctor Who television movie and subsequent tie-in media. Paul talks to us about the possibility of being part of the Doctor Who anniversary celebrations next year and how it felt to take on the iconic role during the long awaited relaunch of the series. I was lucky enough to get to ask a question during McGann's interview at Gallifrey One...it was a silly question. Then, relaying a request from one of the people behind me in line who got sent back to her seat when the panel ran out of time, I asked him to sing, so he gave us the refrain from "I Wish I Was Back in Liverpool." I've loved this piece from "The Yes Album" since I heard it in the '70's and spent many hours trying to crack the code of this and many other Yes pieces in high school...here it is, a few years later (cough), and I started to mess with it on mandolin. Sounded too cutesy, like a music box, but moved it onto my Stefan Sobell octave mando, more in the guitar range. Great fun to play! Dedicated to my fellow Steve Howe fans and to Steve himself, one of the most inventive guitar visionaries of our time and a huge influence on so many of us.

Another of my sonics. This is a replica of the McGann Sonic Screwdriver from the 1996 FOX/BBC movie. The sonic was made by the now out of business Timelord's Pocket. The replica is a near perfect visual match for the original based on screen caps from the DVD and from the web. It was designed to be pushed down and locked in place like the original but the spring is too strong and stripped the locking mechanism. I sent it to a friend of mine who made some of my other sonics (TLP is out of business so I can't send it back to him) but he decided cutting it open would probably destroy it. It remains unrepaired. Despite that flaw it is one of my favorite sonics. This is no longer part of my personal collection and NOT FOR SALE. I have given it to a friend as a thank you gift for some excellent work he's done in keeping an important part of Doctor Who history alive and functioning.
