The second round starts with more frenzied striking exchanges followed by another body lock takedown from McGivern. Horwich is doing a good job of tying him up in the half-guard, negating any ground and pound hopes McGivern might have. McGivern looks for an armlock and uses Horwich's defense as an opportunity to move to side control. Horwich regains guard and looks for an omoplata. McGivern tries to go with it, but Horwich has it locked in tight and he rolls McGivern over but it's too late and the bell rings to end the round. Horwich appears to believe he has won the fight before Matt Lindland corrals him back into his corner.

They get back to their feet and McGivern lands a good right as Horwich responds with a kick to the body. They clinch again, both pummeling for position. Horwich adds another hard kick to the body when they separate, and already a large welt has developed on McGivern's ribs. He seems to be landing the more effective punches, but as usual Horwich seems unfazed by them.
