Mac-T PVC Plastic Surfboard From Bob McTavish
Here's a video of my Mac-T PVC plastic surfboard, made by Australian surfer Bob McTavish. This is one of those great ideas that failed in the marketplace. I bought my Mac-T surfboard in 1997 for around $400. It's an 8-foot mini-longboard, and it is a great all-around surfboard for southern California. It's also a great size for teaching kids to surf. Small and narrow enough to teach them control and balance, but big and floaty enough to make learning easy. I haven't seen much info about the Mac-T surfboards on the internet, and I've only ever seen one other one out in the water. Bob McTavish made shortboard versions of the Mac-T as well as longboards. They were available with or without the rubber deck. If you opted out of the rubber deck option, you got a PVC deck, which you could wax like a normal board, but the rails were still hard rubber. It's a great board, and I was sad too see that they didn't catch on. No, mine isn't for sale, but if you find one for sale, buy it. I hope you like this review of the Mac-T surfboard.

'Going Vertical' Bob McTavish Surf Film Festival Part 1
At the 4th Annual Honolulu Surf Film Festival, Aussie Bob McTavish in his surf film 'Going Vertical' makes his case that he started the short board revolution. He quickly found that Randy Rarick, Dick Brewer and Greg Noll had other ideas about the exact evolution of the short board, and we all found that this is an idea that may be debated for years and best debated with beer. My compliments to the Doris Duke Theater for holding this annual surf festival and especially to Randy Rarick who has made himself one of the key hubs for surf events, keeping surfers together, and for being a living repository of all surfing history. He is certainly not the only surf historian, but he has become one of surfing's best diplomats. This event was being held in conjunction with a week's worth of surf activities culminating in the 6th Hawaiian Vintage Surf Auction at the Blaisdell Galeria and auction room. This video has two parts. This is part one. It encompasses the live Q & A that took place immediately following the movie and will certainly become one of those quoted surf stories for the future.
