At a forum in Hingham on Friday, experts discussed how some memory loss and slowdown in thinking are normal with age, but there are easy steps you can take, starting in your 40s, to prevent them. The daylong program was sponsored by the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association at the Hingham Senior Center. "It's not too late to start, even if you're 80," Dr. Nancy Emerson Lombardo told more than 80 people at the program on Alzheimer's disease. "If you already have some memory loss, you can delay it by five years." Lombardo is with Boston University School of Medicine. More than half of those attending the free event were caregivers and people whose family members are affected by Alzheimer's. The others were professionals. Dr. Richard S. Fischer of New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton said that dementia, or serious memory loss, is not a natural consequence of aging. However, he said, there are normal changes in the brain over time. The most significant is loss of the white matter and this can cause people to have a harder time remembering things, focusing, and can slow down other mental processing. Chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes significantly ncrease the risk of strokes and dementia, he said. Comedy Connections KUA Part 1 Comedy Connections is a special BBC documantary series looking back at classic british comedy sitcoms and this time we look back at one of the BBC's highest rated comedies being Roy Clarke's 1990's ''Keeping Up Appearances'' starring it's number one star Patricia Routledge. The episode is originally half an hour long but due to time restrictions this is a 3 part video series here on Youtube due to us only being able to upload 10 minutes each video. You will also see how the acters in the show look today as they speak in interviews including Patricia Routledge, Clive Swift, Josephine Tewson, David Griffin, Judy Cornwell aswell as the creaters Roy Clarke and Harold Snoad. Shulman answers questions concerning aging and memory changes. A 95-year-old vibrant speaker in high demand around New York, she has many years of experience working with older people. After 27 years of service to NYU's William and Sylvia Silberstein Institute for Aging and Dementia, Emma Shulman, LSW,MPH, its Senior Family Counselor, has retired at the age of 95 to pursue an MA in Cultural Anthropology, her fifth master's degree. Shulman came to the institute as a 68-year-old volunteer to study aging and add an advanced degree in gerontology to those she had earned in social work, business, and psychology.
