Anatomy of an Epidemic - The Explosion of Mental Illness in the West

Buy Book: www.fdrurl.com Robert Whitaker discusses his book 'Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America' In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Every day, 1100 adults and children are added to the government disability rolls because they have become newly disabled by mental illness, with this epidemic spreading most rapidly among our nation's children. What is going on? Anatomy of an Epidemic challenges readers to think through that question themselves. First, Whitaker investigates what is known today about the biological causes of mental disorders. Do psychiatric medications fix "chemical imbalances" in the brain, or do they, in fact, create them? Researchers spent decades studying that question, and by the late 1980s, they had their answer. Readers will be startled—and dismayed—to discover what was reported in the scientific journals. Then comes the scientific query at the heart of this book: During the past fifty years, when investigators looked at how psychiatric drugs affected long-term outcomes, what did they find? Did they discover that the drugs help people stay well? Function better? Enjoy good physical health? Or did they find that these medications, for some paradoxical reason, increase the likelihood that ...

Docudrama Film (in-production): "WELCOME TO THE DREAM- The Rude Awakening of Rock Stardom". Project Preview Teaser (Full Version 2010) welcome-to-the-dream.com http plus.google.com facebook.com LOGLINE: Surviving the rock dream, a coalition of Recording Artists struggle with the egos and fears of young musicians to save them from the fatal mistakes of stardom. DESCRIPTION: "We want to be the biggest band in the world" is the battle cry from the young musicians in this film. When asked how they will do it, the overwhelming response: "We just copy what the bigger bands are doing". Bigger bands...mostly broke and suicidal. Signing with a major label the goal, understanding the contract optional. Paying to play, at any price. Kids wait in line to follow; the media's amplification of glory and dismissal of reality creates a dangerous dream, and the nightmare of undefined stardom continues to crash and burn into the cemetery where Hendrix, Joplin, Cobain, Bonham and other gifted young artists now rest. The internet has changed the recording industry, but was has NOT changed? Was it the powerless addiction for the artist to share his creativity that fed the industry monster to begin with? Will their roster of fears remain the vulnerability that kills them? Afflicted with a stardom-obsessed diet and fed by the media controlled menu, the young artist races faster than ever to be seen though the window of disposable talent with reckless abandon. CCHR: ADHD—Labeling normal kids "mentally ill"

ADHD is a bogus mental "disorder" based only on a checklist of behaviors. There are no medical tests to prove any child has ADHD, yet more than 4.5 million kids have been diagnosed and put on drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta, which the US DEA places in the same highly addictive category of drugs as cocaine, morphine and opium. According to the Center for Disease Control, boys are much more likely to be diagnosed "ADHD" than girls. The "checklist" for ADHD could fit any normal child and literally includes such ridiculous criteria as " runs about or climbs excessively in situations when it is not appropriate" (we are talking about KIDS here... right?) " is often 'on the go "acts as if driven by a motor" "blurts out answers" "is easily distracted" " loses pencils or toys" "often doesn't seem to listen" To be perfectly clear — this is ALL that it takes to diagnoses a child with a 'mental disorder' of ADHD; a checklist of behaviors (the above is taken directly from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), psychiatry's billing bible. There is no medical or scientific test that is then taken afterwards to 'confirm' this diagnoses -- simply because there isn't one. So the ONLY way a kid is ever diagnosed is simply based on the checklist. That's it. There are no blood tests, brain scans, chemical imbalance tests, X-rays or "genetic" factors to prove any child has a mental "illness" called ADHD. This is simply a ...

Removing The Stigma of Mental Illness

IN ORDER TO READ THE WORDS MORE CLEARLY, PLEASE WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY MODE. It is human nature to fear what we don't understand. Due to misunderstandings and inaccuracies made by the media,(everything from news reports to movies for example) our society's view has been distorted, which has created stigma about certain mental illnesses. DEFINITION OF STIGMA: a mark of disgrace or infamy; a stain or reproach, as on one's reputation. DEFINITION OF MENTAL ILLNESS: n. Any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual's normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors, such as infection or head trauma. Also called emotional illness, mental disease, mental disorder. 'dictionary.com' Bottom line is that we all must get more educated and stop using our fears as excuses. MISUNDERSTOOD "MENTAL ILLNESSES" (Bibolar / Schizophrenia etc. )

What is bibolar disorders true nature? schizophrenia as well.. How nowadays society treats people, creates labels and misunderstoods many souls, creating "mental illnesses" and that for people are treated wrongly. Nowadays more and more people are getting more problems than getting right kind of help, information and guidance and support.. How we can get some help to this matter, balance our energies, ups and downs and feel normal about this matter.. its all about our souls journey, not an illness.. None of the synthetic or any meds can take this experience away of ourselves - but some natural ways (remedies and alternative healing methods, right kind of conversational support) can help us when we are on that journey of detoxing and cleansing of our souls and eventually we become more balanced through many ups and dows..trust me, i know :) What is the most essential in this matter is to give right kind of help from heart to heart, people to people, supportive guidance rather than immeadite short lasting "help" that just puts the "problem" to the side and it will feel even worse. Through many years of wondering this matter and now as im seeing the world through "awakens" eyes, I here share my views.. Blessings and much love to you all.. Remember, the power is within YOU! We truly have to go deep within and face our lights and darks, confront, accept certain things in us bravely..as we are it all! Mental Illness In Children: Anxiety, Disruptive, Mood, Psychotic Disorders

www.encognitive.com Low Vitamin DA Contributor to Mental Disorders in Children? June 2, 2011 (Honolulu, Hawaii) — Children with severe mental health disorders, including psychosis, have twice the rate of vitamin D insufficiency as mentally healthy children, new research suggests. A study presented here at the American Psychiatric Association 2011 Annual Meeting by investigators at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland showed 21% of children with severe psychiatric symptoms requiring residential care had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels lower than 20 ng/mL (the American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP] minimum recommended level) compared with 14% of children who were participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III), a population-based study designed to assess the health and nutritional status of children and adults in the United States. "That is 50% more than children in a normal population, so based on our findings this means that 1 out of 5 kids with severe mental illness has low vitamin D levels," principal investigator Keith Cheng, MD, told Medscape Medical News. www.medscape.com -------------------------- Connection between vitamin D and mental illness in children Goodnight sun: why vitamin D is critical New study shows links between serious mental illness in kids and vitamin D deficiency A small study in Oregon fond that children with serious mental illnesses are more likely to be deficiency in vitamin D than ...
